Numerical simulations predict that metal-poor gas accretion from the cosmic web fuels formation of disk galaxies. This paper discusses how controls star formation, and summarizes physical properties expected for accreted by The also collects observational evidence sustaining formation. It reviews inferred neutral ionized hydrogen, as well stars. A number characterizing large samples star-forming galaxies can be explained accretion, in particular, relationship among stellar mass, metallicity,...
We present the Survey for High-z Absorption Red and Dead Sources (SHARDS), an ESO/GTC Large Program carried out using OSIRIS instrument on 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC). SHARDS is ultra-deep optical spectro-photometric survey of GOODS-N field covering 130 arcmin2 at wavelengths between 500 950 nm with 24 contiguous medium-band filters (providing a spectral resolution R ∼ 50). The data reach AB magnitude 26.5 (at least 3σ level) sub-arcsec seeing in all bands. SHARDS' main goal to...
We carry out a systematic search for extremely metal poor (XMP) galaxies in the spectroscopic sample of Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data release 7 (DR7). The XMP candidates are found by classifying all according to form their spectra region 80AA wide around Halpha. Due size, method requires an automatic classification algorithm. use k-means. Our renders 32 having negligible [NII] lines, as expected galaxy spectra. Twenty one them have been previously identified literature -- remaining...
Models of galaxy formation predict that gas accretion from the cosmic web is a primary driver star over history. Except in very dense environments where mergers are also important, model galaxies feed cold streams penetrate their dark matter haloes. Although these predictions unambiguous, observational support has been indirect so far. Here we report spectroscopic evidence for this process extremely metal-poor (XMPs) local Universe, taking form localized starbursts associated with having low...
We measure the oxygen metallicity of ionized gas along major axis seven dwarf star-forming galaxies. Two them, SDSSJ1647+21 and SDSSJ2238+14, show ≃0.5 dex decrements in inner regions with enhanced star formation activity. This behavior is similar to drop observed a number local tadpole galaxies by Sánchez Almeida et al., was interpreted as showing early stages assembling disk galaxies, sustained external metal-poor accretion. The agreement tadpoles has several implications. (1) It proves...
Gas inflow feeds galaxies with low-metallicity gas from the cosmic web, sustaining star formation across Hubble time.We make a connection between these inflows and metallicity inhomogeneities in star-forming galaxies, by using synthetic narrow-band images of Hα emission line zoom-in AMR cosmological simulations stellar masses M * 10 9 at redshifts z = 2-7.In ∼50 per cent cases lower than 4, gives rise to star-forming, Hα-bright, off-centre clumps. Most clumps have metallicities, weighted...
We study the molecular content and star formation efficiency of 21 Blue Compact Dwarfs (BCDs). present CO(1-0) (2-1) observations, further supplemented with additional CO measurements multiwavelength ancillary data from literature. find luminosity to be correlated stellar HI masses, SFR tracers, size starburst its metallicity. BCDs appear offset Schmidt-Kennicutt (SK) law, showing extremely low ($\lesssim$0.1 Gyr) H2 H2+HI depletion timescales. The departure SK law is smaller when...
Using the 'k-means' cluster analysis algorithm, we carry out an unsupervised classification of all galaxy spectra in seventh and final Sloan Digital Sky Survey data release (SDSS/DR7). Except for shift to restframe wavelengths, normalization g-band flux, no manipulation is applied original spectra. The algorithm guarantees that galaxies with similar belong same class. We find 99 % can be assigned only 17 major classes, 11 additional minor classes including remaining 1%. not unique since many...
ABRIDGED: A detailed 2D study of the central region NGC5253 has been performed to characterize stellar and ionized gas structure as well extinction distribution, physical properties kinematics in ~210pc x 130pc. We utilized optical integral field spectroscopy (IFS) data obtained with FLAMES. map for shows that largest is associated prominent Giant HII region. Tadpole galaxies, with a bright peripheral clump on faint tail, are morphological types unusual in the nearby universe but very common early on. Low mass local tadpoles were identified and studied photometrically previous work, which we complete here analyzing their chemical dynamical properties. We measure Halpha velocity curves of seven tadpoles, representing 50% initial sample. Five them show evidence for rotation (sim 70%), sixth target hints at it. Often center is spatially offset...
The site for the future European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) is already known to be Armazones, near Paranal (Chile). selection was based on a variety of considerations, with an important one being quality atmosphere astronomy planned ELT. We present overview characterization atmospheric parameters candidate sites, making use standard procedures and instruments as carried out within Framework Programme VI (FP6) Union. have achieved full selected sites considered. Local UV-bright galaxies in the Kiso survey include clumpy systems with kpc-size star complexes that resemble young surveys at high redshift. We compare clump masses and underlying disks several dozen from each of these to normal spirals. Photometry spectroscopy for spiral sample come Sloan Digital Sky Survey. find largest UDF clumpies terms formation rates, masses, surface densities. Clump densities spirals are smaller. If proportional turbulent Jeans mass interstellar medium, then most...
This work presents the structural decomposition of a sample 11 disk galaxies, which span range different morphological types. The U, B, V, R, and I photometric information given in Paper (color color-index images luminosity, ellipticity, position-angle profiles) has been used to decide what types components form galaxies before carrying out decomposition. We find model such as bulges, disks, bars, lenses rings.
We have characterized the underlying stellar host in a sample of 28 blue compact galaxies (BCGs), by fitting their 2D light distributions. Their structural parameters were related with galaxy properties such as colours and gas content. These also compared those other types. All BCG hosts but one show low Sersic indexes (0.5 < n 2), mean effective radius <$r_{e,B}$>=1.11$\pm$0.74 kpc, surface brightness <$\mu_{e,B}$> = 22.59$\pm$0.68 mag arcsec$^{-2}$. Host radii scale linearly luminosity,...
We present a comparison between in situ measurements and forecasted data at the Observatorio del Roque de Los Muchachos. Forecasting is obtained with Weather Research (WRF) model associated turbulence parametrization which follows Trinquet–Vernin model. The purpose of this study to validate capability WRF forecast atmospheric optical conditions (seeing related adaptive optics parameters). final aim provide tool optimize observing time observatories, so-called flexible scheduling. Extremely metal-poor (XMP) galaxies are defined to have gas-phase metallicity smaller than a tenth of the solar value (12 + log[O/H] < 7.69). They uncommon, chemically and possibly dynamically primitive, with physical conditions characteristic earlier phases Universe. We search for new XMPs in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) work that complements Paper I. This time high electron temperature objects selected; since metals main coolant gas, metal- poor contain high-temperature gas. Using...
Abstract The role of gas accretion in galaxy evolution is still a matter debate. presence inflows metal-poor that trigger star formation bursts low metallicity has been proposed as an explanation for the local anticorrelation between rate (SFR) and gas-phase ( Z g ) found literature. In present study, we show how also part diversified range behaviors sample more than 700 nearby spiral galaxies from SDSS-IV MaNGA survey. We have characterized relation SFR after subtracting azimuthally...
Accurate, absolute and reproducible measurements are the expected qualities of any instrument. A Differential Image Motion Monitor (DIMM) is presented which assesses astronomical seeing with those requirements. It has been designed also to be reliable, simple, trasportable, easy set up, operate maintain. Context.Large surveys such as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey have made large amounts of spectroscopic and photometric data galaxies available, thereby providing important information for studying galaxy evolution in dense environments.
Tadpole galaxies have a giant star-forming region at the end of an elongated intensity distribution. Here we use SDSS data to determine ages, masses, and surface densities heads tails in 14 local tadpoles selected from Kiso Michigan surveys UV-bright galaxies, compare them previously studied Hubble Ultra Deep Field. The young stellar mass head scales linearly with restframe galaxy luminosity, ranging ~10^5 M_solar absolute magnitude U=-13 mag 10^9 U=-20 mag. corresponding density increases...
Extremely metal-poor (XMP) galaxies are chemically, and possibly dynamically, primordial objects in the local Universe. Our objective is to characterize HI content of XMP as a class, using reference list 140 known XMPs compiled by Morales-Luis et al. (2011). We have observed 29 XMPs, which had not been before at 21 cm, Effelsberg radio telescope. This information was complemented with data published literature for further 53 XMPs. In addition, optical from provided morphologies, stellar...
