Doxorubicin causes cardiac injury and cardiomyopathy in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Measuring biomarkers during therapy might help individualize treatment by immediately identifying cardiomyopathy.Children high-risk ALL were randomly assigned to receive doxorubicin alone (n = 100; 75 analyzed) or dexrazoxane 105; 81 analyzed). Echocardiograms serial serum measurements of troponin T (cTnT; biomarker), N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP; high-sensitivity...

To determine whether cardiovascular abnormalities in childhood cancer survivors are restricted to patients exposed cardiotoxic anthracyclines and cardiac irradiation how risk factors for atherosclerotic disease systemic inflammation contribute global status. We assessed echocardiographic characteristics 201 of with without exposure treatments at a median 11 years after diagnosis (range, 3 32 years) 76 sibling controls. The 156 had below normal left ventricular (LV) mass, wall thickness,...

Doxorubicin, effective against many malignancies, is limited by cardiotoxicity. Continuous-infusion doxorubicin, compared with bolus-infusion, reduces early cardiotoxicity in adults. Its effectiveness reducing late children remains uncertain. We determined continuous-infusion doxorubicin cardioprotective efficacy long-term survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).

BACKGROUND Doxorubicin is associated with progressive cardiac dysfunction, possibly through the formation of doxorubicin‐iron complexes leading to free‐radical injury. The authors determined frequency hemochromatosis (HFE) gene mutations hereditary and their relationship doxorubicin‐associated cardiotoxicity in survivors childhood high‐risk acute lymphoblastic leukemia. METHODS Peripheral blood was tested for 2 common HFE allelic variants: C282Y H63D. Serum troponin‐T (cTnT) N‐terminal...

Background. Fetal bone effects of maternal tenofovir use have not been well studied. We sought to compare whole-body mineral content (BMC) newborns exposed vs in utero. Methods. enrolled participants from April 2011 June 2013 at 14 US clinical sites. Singleton infants women with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection who took late pregnancy (tenofovir-exposed) or no during (tenofovir-unexposed) were within 72 hours birth. Infants born before 36 weeks gestation confirmed HIV excluded....

Abstract Background Childhood cancer survivors may have premature symptomatic cardiovascular and non‐cardiovascular diseases that contribute to reduced capacity for physical activity. Studies of exercise identification risk factors in are limited. Procedure We assessed maximal myocardial oxygen consumption ( ${\rm V}_{{\rm O}_{2} \,{\rm max}} $ , a measure capacity) at least 4 years after diagnosis sibling controls. evaluated associations between age, sex, treatments, cardiac structure...

Background. Age and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) treatment may affect the association of HIV infection with atherosclerosis. Methods. We used identical carotid artery B-mode ultrasonographic methods in 5 cohorts participating National Heart, Lung, Blood Institute HIV-CVD Collaborative to measure intima-media thickness right far wall common (CCA-IMT) bifurcation (BIF-IMT) between 2010 2013. Participants aged 6–75 years were either infected or uninfected. Linear regression assessed...
