The force as a function of separation has been measured between two molecularly smooth surfaces immersed in the liquid octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (OMCTS) whose molecules are quasispherical diameter ∼1.0 nm. is an oscillatory distance, varying attraction and repulsion, with periodicity equal to size within experimental resolution ∼0.1 oscillations decay rapidly distance: their measurable range 6–10 molecular diameters magnitude exceeds that conventional van der Waals forces at small...

We present measurements of the thickness as a function time liquid films they are squeezed between molecularly smooth mica surfaces. Three Newtonian, nonpolar liquids have been studied: octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane, n-tetradecane, and n-hexadecane. The film thicknesses determined with an accuracy 0.2 nm drain from ∼1 μm to few molecular layers. Results in excellent agreement Reynolds theory lubrication for above 50 nm. For thinner drainage is slower than theoretical prediction, which can be...

A descriptive account is given of the surface forces acting between two solids. Different contributions to force are outlined, with particular attention paid underlying mechanisms, and how they affected by nature medium surfaces. This followed a discussion areas ceramic science engineering in which play role.

Simultaneous measurements of surface force and charge demonstrate strong attraction due to the spontaneous transfer electrical from one smooth insulator (mica) another (silica) as a result simple, nonsliding contact in dry nitrogen. The measured densities are 5 20 millicoulombs per square meter after contact. work required separate charged surfaces is typically 6 9 joules meter, comparable fracture energies ionic-covalent materials. Observation partial gas discharges when approximately 1...

Measurements have been made of the solvation forces between mica surfaces in even-numbered n-alkanes from hexane to hexadecane. In all cases force law is qualitatively very similar, characterized by a decaying oscillatory function distance, as occurs for simple isotropic liquids. The spacing successive minima does not increase with carbon number, and comparable width linear alkane molecule rather than its length or any average diameter. This suggests that alkanes some tendency towards...

Refractive indices have been measured throughout the nematic phase of 4-n-pentyl-4'cyanobiphenyl (5CB) and smectic A phases 4-n-octyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (8CB). The Vuks Neugebauer methods calculating order parameter are compared. Without knowledge molecular polarisabilities it is only possible to calculate a quantity proportional parameter, within this limitation found that two give identical results. scaled using extrapolation method suggested by Haller [14]. An atomic force microscope was used to measure the forces acting between two polystyrene latex spheres in aqueous media. The results show an electrostatic repulsion at large separations which is overtaken by attractive "hook" that pulls into contact from a considerable range (20−400 nm), much larger than could be expected for van der Waals attraction. of operation this attraction varies one experiment another and not correlated with electrolyte concentration. We report resistivity, $\ensuremath{\rho}(T)$, and specific-heat, $C(T)$, results on near stoichiometric $\mathrm{CeCu}{}_{2}{\mathrm{Si}}_{2}$ samples, in the vicinity of a quantum critical point (QCP). The latter is defined by ${T}_{A}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$, where ${T}_{A}\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.8\mathrm{K}$ marks transition into spin-density--wave-type ``phase $A$'' which competes with heavy-fermion superconductivity below ${T}_{c}\ensuremath{\approx}0.65\mathrm{K}$.
