Magnetoelectric (ME) properties were investigated for an $XY$-like spin glass (SG) system, ${\mathrm{Ni}}_{x}{\mathrm{Mn}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{TiO}}_{3}$ with ilmenite structure. The ME effect is usually observed in systems peculiar couplings between a crystal lattice and magnetic order. Nonetheless, we found antisymmetric nonzero tensor elements below ${T}_{\mathrm{ME}}=8--10\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{K}$ samples showing SG transitions. At ${T}_{\mathrm{ME}}$, no specific heat anomaly...

Abstract In vortex-like spin arrangements, multiple spins can combine into emergent multipole moments. Such moments have broken space-inversion and time-reversal symmetries, therefore exhibit linear magnetoelectric (ME) activity. Three types of such are known: toroidal; monopole; quadrupole So far, however, the ME activity these has only been established experimentally for toroidal moment. Here we propose a magnetic square cupola cluster, in which four corner-sharing square-coordinated...

Significance The quantum spin liquid state has been intensively pursued since Anderson proposed the resonating valence bond model. On other hand, liquids based on another electronic degree of freedom, orbital, believed unrealistic, because energy scale orbital correlation is normally one order magnitude higher than exchange coupling, resulting in an ordering at a signicantly high temperature accompanied by cooperative Jahn−Teller (JT) distortion.
