We report the early growth and neurologic findings of 48 infants in Brazil diagnosed with probable congenital Zika virus syndrome followed to age 1-8 months. Most these had microcephaly (86.7%) craniofacial disproportion (95.8%). The clinical pattern included poor head increasingly negative z-scores, pyramidal/extrapyramidal symptoms, epilepsy.
BackgroundLittle is known regarding the developmental consequences of congenital Zika syndrome (CZS) without microcephaly at birth. Most previously published clinical series were descriptive and they had small sample sizes.Study designWe conducted a cohort study to compare growth, clinical, motor development outcomes for 110 children with CZS born up their third birthday. Ninety-three head circumference (HC) birth abstracted did not have hypertensive hydrocephalus birth, where 61 32...
Studies suggest that higher cognitive functions could precipitate seizures in juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME). The present study aimed to analyze the effects of mental activity on epileptiform discharges and patients with JME compare them those habitual methods activation.Seventy-six (41 female) underwent a video-EEG (electroencephalography) neuropsychologic protocol (VNPP) activation for 4-6 h.Twenty-nine 76 (38.2%) presented provocative effect, inhibition was seen 28 31 (90.3%). A mixed...
Abstract This study aimed to report the incidence of chronic pelvic pain in women 12 24 months postpartum, identify independently associated factors, and conduct a causal inference with C-section as exposure. was cross-sectional nested within 2 distinct prospective cohorts from Brazilian cities. Chronic dependent variable. Independent variables were collected. Fisher exact test or Pearson χ t Wilcoxon rank-sum performed appropriate, P -values adjusted. Data assumed be missing at random,...
This article aims to understand how parents of children with microcephaly received the diagnosis. qualitative study was conducted at State Referral Center for Children's Neurodevelopment, Care, and Rehabilitation (NINAR) in São Luís, Maranhão State, Brazil, from April 2017 February 2018. Participants included or guardians microcephaly. Data collection structured semi-structured interviews 3 couples, 16 mothers, 1 great-grandmother, totaling 20 interviews. The sample defined by saturation...
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability topiramate (TPM) in juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME). METHOD: We assessed seizure control adverse effects TPM 22 patients (18 females) aged 13 53 years. Target dosage up 200 mg/day. were subdivided into 3 groups: those treated with plus side (n=4); non-controlled seizures (n=15) JME newly diagnosed (n=3). RESULTS: Sixteen completed first year follow-up. Generalized tonic-clonic completely controlled 10 (62.5%);...
Seizures in Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy (JME) are dependent on the sleep-wake cycle and precipitant factors, among which sleep deprivation (SD) is one of most important. Still an under diagnosed syndrome, misinterpretation EEGs contributes to diagnostic delay. Despite this, a quantitative EEG investigation SD effects has not been performed. We investigated effect 41 patients, aged 16-50 yr. (mean 25.4), who had yet syndromic diagnosis after mean delay 8.2 Two recordings separated by 48-hour...
This study analyzed possible associations between the trimester of maternal Zika virus infection (ZIKV) in pregnancy, severity brain computed tomography (CT) findings and presence microcephaly at birth children with Congenital Syndrome (CZS). It was an analytical a cohort CZS. Symptoms were dichotomized into 1st pregnancy other trimesters. Head circumference (HC) used to calculate z-score. Mild defined as HC 2 ≥3 standard deviations (SD) below mean for each gestational age sex, severe when...
Reflex traits have been described in patients with idiopathic generalized epilepsy. We report on four juvenile myoclonic epilepsy whom the coexistence of praxis- and language-induced jerks was documented video-polygraphic EEG recordings.[Published video sequences].
Little information on gross motor function of congenital Zika syndrome (CZS) children is available. To evaluate in CZS aged up to 3 years, and its associated factors changes a minimum interval 6 months. One hundred with cerebral palsy (36 confirmed 64 presumed CZS) were evaluated the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) Measure (GMFM-88/GMFM-66). Forty-six reevaluated. Wilcoxon tests, tests for paired samples, percentile scores, score performed.Clinical socioeconomic...
Hypsarrhythmia is a specific chaotic morphology, present in the interictal period of electroencephalogram (EEG) signal patients with West Syndrome (WS), severe form childhood epilepsy and that, recently, was also identified examinations Zika Virus Congenital (ZVCS). This innovative work proposes development computational methodology for analysis differentiation, based on time-frequency domain, between pattern WS ZVCS hypsarrhythmia. The EEG carried out from Continuous Wavelet Transform...
Exencephaly/anencephaly is a rare neural tube defect occurring early in embryogenesis. We report 14-week-old fetus with exencephaly whom central nervous system tissue was developed and preserved. There were 2 symmetrical structures grossly resembling cerebral hemispheres, which on histologic ultrastructural study, consisted of combination ependymoblastomatous rosettes canals primitive tissue. The brainstem spinal cord partially normally formed, although descending tracts not apparent. No...

Little is known about the evolution of head circumference (HC) in children with congenital Zika syndrome (CZS). This study aims to evaluate HC growth CZS first three years life and identify associated factors. data obtained at birth neuropediatric consultations from 74 were collected Child's Health Handbook, parents' reports, medical records. Predictors z-score investigated using different mixed-effects models; Akaike's information criterion was used for model selection. The decreased -2.7 ±...
