Does ownership status of agricultural land determine farmers' soil use behaviour? Why (not)? We investigate this old question using multiple methods and data. apply econometric analysis to plot-level data whether planting decisions differ between rented owned plots. In addition, we analyse interviews with Austrian farmers the aim explaining (a lack of) differences. find a very small influence tenancy on crop choice in quantitative part study, qualify these findings qualitative part. If at...
Climate change poses a serious threat to the stability of national and global food systems. Agricultural productivity growth is needed meet increasing demand land use competition. Based on 2009–2012 panel 133 cereal farms in Austria, we evaluate if crop diversification can increase both farm labor resilience adverse climatic conditions. To identify productive implications interaction between diversity conditions, apply partial correlated random effects model accounting for potential...
We measure the eco-efficiency (EE) of agricultural production in regard to soil erosion and decompose it into technical efficiency (TE) conservation (SCE). Data Envelopment Analysis is applied a panel 135 Austrian crop farms. As proxy for behavior, we estimate C- P-factors, frequently Revised Universal Soil Loss Equations, at parcel-level combine this with farm-level accountancy data. investigate impact land tenure other determinants on EE its components using truncated regression...
Partible inheritance is considered an important driver in the fragmentation of farmland use and ownership, but this lacks empirical evidence. We combine parcel-level data on land ownership with historical information traditions from Eastern Austria where partible impartible coexisted. multiple regression analysis coarsened exact matching to show that more fragmented regions. Despite partially consolidating their via rental market, farms these areas own less land, farm smaller scattered...
We analyse persistent and transient technical efficiency of crop farms in Austria from 2003 to 2017 by estimating the four-component stochastic frontier model using a multi-step procedure extend it account for heterogeneity bias introducing Mundlak adjustments. Moreover, we examine determinants both inefficiency. Results show that with favourable natural conditions, higher share family labour, lower owned land are more persistently efficient. Farm specialization, size, farmers’ age...
Abstract As the 2013 Reform of Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) calls for harmonisation Single Payment Scheme (SPS) payments, we estimate implications this mandate on agricultural land rental rates over time as Germany began harmonising payments in 2010. Using Bavarian farm‐level panel data find strong capitalisation effects that increase substantially years following 2009. On average, marginal effect an additional SPS euro is 37 cents, growing to 53 cents develops.
Although important, the spatial dimension is often neglected in studies of market power and competition agricultural markets. This paper investigates for raw milk between dairies under presence marketing cooperatives. Since observed reality, our model based on uniform delivered pricing overlapping areas. We compare cooperative price matching with non-cooperative Hotelling–Smithies behaviour. Utilising a vector error correction model, we show that low transmission Germany line seems rational...
Based on 7,300 agricultural land sales transactions, we estimate the effect of 2003 reform E.U. Common Agricultural Policy prices. As opposed to main body literature values, do not start from a demand-oriented net present value approach or hedonic pricing method, but derive our reduced form equation spatial market model. Our empirical model accounts for dependence and endogeneity explanatory variables. A reduction payments by 50 €/ha would decrease prices 445 before 984 after reform. <i>(JEL...
This study gives an overview of the theoretical foundations, empirical procedures and derived results literature on determinants agricultural land prices. A particular interest is given to effects government support policies. Almost all studies determination prices either refer net present value method or hedonic pricing approach. While two approaches have different basis, they converge in their implementation. Empirical use a broad range variables explain values we systematise these into...
Abstract Nearly 80 per cent of Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) expenditures are spent on three different measures: first pillar payments (FPPs), agri-environmental (AEPs) and less favoured area (LFAPs). Based a dynamic panel model farm accounting data for Bavaria, we find that, average, 30 FPPs, 40–50 LFAPs, but no relevant share AEPs capitalised into land rental prices. The capitalisation ratio varies considerably across regions. Above average ratios FPPs observed in more favourable areas...
Abstract We combine farm accounting data with high‐resolution meteorological data, and climate scenarios to estimate change impacts adaptation potentials at the level. To do so, we adapt seminal model of Moore Lobell (2014) who applied panel econometrics aggregated from regional (subnational) discuss empirically investigate advantages challenges applying such models farm‐level including issues endogeneity explanatory variables, heterogeneity responses weather shocks, measurement errors in...
Abstract The paper evaluates the transfer efficiency of Austrian bread grain policy taking into account distributive leakages, i.e. how much transfers officially intended to support farm income are finally realised in upstream and downstream industries. Gardner's [Am. J. Agric. Econ. 65 (1983) 225] well‐known measure average (ATE) is augmented for case more than two social groups computer‐intensive simulation procedures utilised deal with parameter uncertainty.
A consistent and comprehensive ranking of journals relevant for agricultural economists cannot rely on impact factors at least two major reasons: (i) the scientific database by Thomson Reuters, which standard factor is based, includes only a very limited number journals; (ii) be compared across research fields different sizes. Survey-based journal rankings may overcome these problems. We report such survey-based initiated Agricultural Economics Associations Germany Austria. Results...
Based on a graphical model we analyse the impacts of Fischler Reform land prices and capitalization single farm payments (sfp) into values. The shows that if there are more sfp than eligible land, ratio will not decline but rather increase due to inclusion animal premiums in sfp. We can confirm our theoretical results for cross-section data rental Bavaria 2005. Empirical indicate reform capitalized coupled direct time prior reform.
In this paper I improve Gardner's surplus transformation curve framework by assuming that governments are able to vary many policy instruments simultaneously instead of only one.I use my find the combination currently used which provides most efficient income redistribution for Austrian bread grains market.Comparing with actual reveals 464 X 10 6 shillings were wasted.I theoretically compare a small country transfer efficiency every possible pair four major agricultural instruments: floor...

The paper provides a general framework of normative agricultural policy analysis within which it is possible to unify forty years literature. It shown that the literature has gone from examining very small set simple policies much broader combine instruments simultaneously. In ranking alternative economists have tried consider distributive equity. While at glance may seem many different methods been used equity, we show in all these can be traced back three based on welfarism and Pareto efficiency.

Agricultural economists have a long history of emphasizing and analyzing the spatial dimension agricultural food markets. Despite rich body literature important contributions to economics, one aspect is frequently disregarded: oligopsonistic nature markets due competition neighboring buyers farm products. This review presents theoretical foundations pricing, competition, location in terms buyer power discusses concepts that are relevant for By providing comprehensive overview prior work, we...
