A major challenge in nanoscience and nanotechnology is the rational assembly of nanoscale objects. Here we report that gold nanorods, aspect ratio 18, can be functionalized with a biotin disulfide, subsequent addition streptavidin links rods together an end-to-end manner much more often than expected.

Sensitivity to chromium, cobalt, nickel, molybdenum, vanadium, and titanium was studied by patch tests in 50 patients who had received total joint replacements. Nineteen (38%) were sensitive one or more of the metals. In 23 non-traumatic failure prosthesis occurred, 15 these metal. Out 27 with no evidence loosening, four nickel cobalt only. Dermatological reactions occurred 13 after surgery; only eight, however, there metal sensitivity. These findings indicate that metal-on-metal...

Three polar poly(para-phenylene ethynylene)s (PPE) were synthesized by utilizing the Heck-Sonogashira protocol. Two of PPEs carry beta-glucopyranose substituents. Depending upon linker used between glycol units and backbone, fluorescence these can be quenched Hg2+ Pb2+ to a varying degree. Monomeric model compounds that are substituted with only one glucose unit not efficiently quenched. The presence many substituents in PPE assembly led large increase binding constant quenching was amplified.

Microstructuring of conjugated polymers is facile utilizing the breath figure approach. Dilute solutions in carbon disulfide form highly ordered 2D hexagonal bubble arrays (see Figure and inside cover). The are obtained if moist air blown over polymer solutions. Evaporative cooling leads to condensation water droplets onto liquid surface. After solvent evaporated, array observed.

The photophysics of dialkylamino- and/or pyridine-containing functional chromophores, 1,4-distyryl-2,5-bis(ethynylaryl)benzenes (cruciforms) was investigated; their fluorescence quantum yields and emissive lifetimes were determined. Depending upon substituents, the frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) these cruciforms are either congruent, i.e., HOMO LUMO occupy same real space, or disjoint, is located on one branch cruciform while second one. Donor-acceptor substitution leads to a disjoint...

A series of chirally substituted poly (p-phenyleneethynylene) copolymers was prepared by alkyne metathesis mixtures two different 2,5-dialkyl-1,4-dipropynylbenzenes. One the monomers chiral bis-2,5-(S)-3,7-dimethyloctyl-1,4-dipropynylbenzene, and second one an achiral dipropynyl monomer. If content monomer is 25-50 mol %, unusually large chiroptical effects, that is, optical dissymmetries, result in absorption (g = -0.38) emission -0.19) these copolymers. The dissymmetries can be explained a...

We recently described the assembly of fluorescent deoxyriboside monomers ("fluorosides") into DNA-like phosphodiester oligomers (oligodeoxyfluorosides or ODFs) in which hydrocarbon and heterocyclic aromatic fluorophores interact both physically electronically. Here we report identification a multicolor set water-soluble ODF dyes that display emission colors across visible spectrum, all can be simultaneously excited by long-wavelength UV light at 340−380 nm. Nine combinations of pi-electron donors and acceptors were examined by UV-vis, fluorescence (1)H-NMR spectroscopy to identify pi-stacked charge transfer complexes in macromolecular supramolecular constructs. The high association constant pyrene naphthalene diimide suggests a preferentially pi-stacking pair rationalized frontier orbital congruence.
