Langmuir−Blodgett technique was used to assemble monolayers (with areas over 20 cm2) of aligned silver nanowires that are ∼50 nm in diameter and 2−3 μm length. These possess pentagonal cross-sections pyramidal tips. They close-packed parallel each other. The resulting nanowire serve as excellent substrates for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) with large electromagnetic field enhancement factors (2 × 105 thiol 2,4-dinitrotoluene, 2 109 Rhodamine 6G) can readily be ultrasensitive,...
1. The magnetic field generated by a brief current in 9 cm diameter flat circular coil varies rapidly with time and when applied over the human scalp it is capable of exciting motor structures subserving small hand muscles. With peak at centre 0.9‐1.6 Tesla, single stimuli produced twitches right abductor digiti minimi (a.d.m.), first dorsal interosseous (f.d.i.) adductor pollicis Compound muscle action potentials (c.m.a.p.s) units from these muscles were recorded. 2. twitch force...
Symptomatic irrepairable rotator cuff tears usually entail complete loss of the substance supraspinatus and infraspinatus tendons. Heating of a ruthenium surface on which carbon monoxide and atomic oxygen are coadsorbed leads exclusively to desorption monoxide. In contrast, excitation with femtosecond infrared laser pulses enables also the formation dioxide. The is caused by coupling adsorbate phonon bath substrate, whereas oxidation reaction initiated hot substrate electrons, as evidenced observed subpicosecond dynamics density functional calculations. presence this laser-induced pathway allows elucidation microscopic...
This overview addresses the atomistic aspects of degradation layered LiMO2 (M = Ni, Co, Mn) oxide Li-ion battery cathode materials, aiming to shed light on fundamental mechanisms especially inside active materials and at their interfaces. It includes recent results obtained by novel in situ/in operando diffraction methods, modelling, quasi situ surface science analysis. Degradation material occurs upon overcharge, resulting from a positive potential shift anode. Oxygen loss eventual phase...
Cerium oxide is an important material for catalytic and fuel cell applications. We present ab initio density functional theory (DFT) study of the vibrational properties ceria focusing on interpretation Raman spectra polycrystalline powder samples, with bands in frequency region between 250 1200 cm–1. The model systems include oxidized CeO2 as well reduced CeO2–x Ce2O3 bulk materials together CeO2(111) oxygen defective CeO2–x(111) surfaces. experimentally observed band at cm–1 assigned to a...
Ceria is an interesting component for a variety of catalytic and fuel cell applications. In the study described here, ten different commercial ceria samples as well synthesized were investigated in detail regarding their (defect) structure characteristic properties using XRD, N2 adsorption–desorption, optical spectroscopy (Raman, DRIFTS, UV–vis). The investigations revealed correlations surface defect features DRIFTS) those bulk defects Raman feature at around 250 cm–1 was demonstrated to be...
Abstract Central motor conduction (CMC) was evaluated in 32 normal subjects and 83 patients with multiple sclerosis, the findings were correlated clinical signs evoked potential data. Mean 6.2 msec (SD 0.86 msec), amplitudes cortical stimuli least 18% those wrist. abnormal 60 sclerosis (72%); this well brisk flexor jerks ( p < 0.005). 79%...
The frequency of motor vehicle and working accidents was analyzed by means a strictly anomymous questionnaire in 156 patients with sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) 160 age-gender matched controls. In the SAS group 12.4% all drivers had as compared to 2.9% control (p<0.005). accident rate 13.0 per million km more severe (AHI > 34/h, n=78) 1.1 milder 10–34/h, (p<0.05), 0.78 (p<0.005), respectively. rates both were also greater than 0.02 "accidents due sleepiness" one Swiss driving population...
Paramedian thalamic stroke (PTS) is a cause of organic hypersomnia, which in the absence systematic sleep-wake studies has been attributed to disruption ascending activating impulses and considered "dearoused" state. However, an increasing mount data suggests role thalamus sleep regulation raises possibility that disturbance contributes hypersomnia PTS. We evaluated 12 patients with magnetic resonance imaging-proven isolated PTS 10 >20 hours behavior per day. Nocturnal polysomnographic...
Utilization of living cells for therapies in regenerative medicine requires a fundamental understanding the interactions between different and their environment. Moreover, common models based on adherent two-dimensional cultures are not appropriate to simulate complex that occur three-dimensional (3D) cell-microenvironment vivo. In this study, we present computer-aided method printing multiple cell types 3D array using laser-assisted bioprinting. By spots human adipose-derived stem (ASCs)...
The removal of the surfactant (EO(20)PO(70)EO(20)) by washing before final calcination is a critical step in synthesis silica SBA-15. In contrast to with pure water or ethanol, and ethanol may, depending on quantity solvent used, alter homogeneity order pores, but also lead an increase surface area A reduction volume controlled protocol allow high SBA-15 materials narrow monomodal pore size distribution. For larger batch sizes influence quality reduced.
Background and Purpose— Visual neglect is a frequent disability in stroke adversely affects mobility, discharge destination, length of hospital stay. It assumed that its severity enhanced by released interhemispheric inhibition from the unaffected toward affected hemisphere. Continuous theta burst transcranial magnetic stimulation (TBS) new inhibitory brain protocol which has potential to induce behavioral effects outlasting stimulation. We aimed test whether parietal TBS over hemisphere can...
Periodic leg movements in sleep (PLMS) are frequently accompanied by arousals and autonomic activation, but the pathophysiologic significance of these manifestations is unclear.Changes heart rate variability (HRV), HRV spectra, electroencephalogram (EEG) spectra associated with idiopathic PLMS were compared changes isolated respiratory-related during sleep. Furthermore, correlations between electromyographic activity, changes, EEG assessed.Sleep laboratory.Whole-night polysomnographic...
Abstract SnO 2 is the most widely used metal oxide gas‐sensing material but a detailed understanding of its functioning still lacking despite relevance for applications. To gain new mechanistic insight into gas sensors under working conditions, we have developed an operando approach based on combined UV/Vis, Raman, and FTIR spectroscopy, allowing us first time to relate sensor response concentration oxygen vacancies in oxide, nature adsorbates, gas‐phase composition. We demonstrate with...
ConspectusBecause ceria (CeO2) is a key ingredient in the formulation of many catalysts, its catalytic roles have received great amount attention from experiment and theory. Its primary function to enhance oxidation activity which largely governed by low activation barrier for creating lattice O vacancies. Such an important characteristic has been exploited CO oxidation, methane partial volatile organic compound water–gas shift (WGS) reaction context automotive applications. A challenge such...
Using time-resolved sum-frequency generation spectroscopy, the C- O stretch vibration of carbon monoxide adsorbed on a single-crystal Ru(001) surface is investigated during femtosecond near-IR laser excitation leading to desorption. A large transient redshift, broadening resonance, and strong decrease in intensity are observed. These originate from coupling low-frequency modes, especially frustrated rotation, that highly excited desorption process.
