Abstract We review palaeoenvironmental proxies and combinations of these relevant for understanding hunter-gatherer niche construction activities in pre-agricultural Europe. Our approach consists two steps: (1) identify the possible range impacts on landscapes based ethnographic studies; (2) evaluate possibly reflecting both Eemian (Last Interglacial, Middle Palaeolithic) Early–Middle Holocene (Mesolithic). found paleoenvironmental were not able to unequivocally establish clear-cut...
In this paper, we review the potential of biocultural heritage in biodiversity protection and agricultural innovation sub-Saharan Africa. We begin by defining concept into four interlinked elements that are revealed through integrated landscape analysis. This concerns transdisciplinary methods whereby must be explored, here emphasise reconstructing histories documenting local values needs to an integral part process. Ecosystem memories relate structuring heterogeneity such activities as...
This paper explores how commons reproduce over time and introduces the concept of commoning to discuss rural continuities change. The point departure is that are essential for local community development in they have an important role mediating social change identity production. Through ethnographic historical study a number systems from village Ängersjö Midwest Sweden, argues more historically socially grounded understanding evolve. examines Ängersjö's within two broad frames –...
Recent paleoclimatic research has revealed that volcanic events around 536–540 AD caused severe, short-term global cooling. For this same period, archeological from various regions evidences significant cultural transformation. However, there is still a lack of understanding how human societies responded and adapted to extreme climate variability new circumstances. This study focuses on the effects 536/540 event in four Scandinavian by exploring shift demographic land use intensity before,...
This paper focusses on animal remains associated with archaeological contexts dated to the middle and later phases of Scandinavian Iron Age, which corresponds first millennium AD. The main question be addressed is whether this record can used for identifying human impact certain populations modelling faunal exploitation interregional trade. In part paper, we undertake a detailed inventory finds recorded in published excavation reports, research catalogues, existing databases maintained...
Report on the 2015 season of Theban Harbours and Waterscapes Survey (THaWS). The paper discusses extension geoarchaeological geophysical investigations to east Ramesseum, continuing work in around Temple Millions Years Amenhotep III, topographic survey western mounds Birket Habu.
Infield systems originated during the early Iron Age and existed until 19th century, although passing many transitions changes. The core features of infield were enclosed infields with hay-meadows crop fields, unenclosed outland mainly used for livestock grazing. We examine changes domesticated landscapes using framework human niche construction, focusing on reciprocal causation affecting change in both culture environment. A first major transition occurred Middle Ages, as a combined effect...
Abstract Shielings are the historically known form of transhumance in Scandinavia, where livestock were moved from farmstead to sites outlands for summer grazing. Pollen analysis has provided a valuable insight into history shielings. This paper presents vegetation reconstruction and archaeological survey shieling Kårebolssätern northern Värmland, western Sweden, renovated that is still operating today. The first evidence human activities area near Hordeum - Cannabis -type pollen grains...
In addressing the current climate crisis, research into how past societies have coped with risk and ecological uncertainty can provide old solutions to new problems. Here, we examine human niche construction be seen as management in face of by exploring spatial patterning land-use activities over time. Dalarna county, an agriculturally marginal boreal forest environment, provides opportunity for change terms agricultural responses other activities. C14 archaeological records complied Museum...
Abstract The author notes that livestock herding in the Kalahari Desert would require water during dry season. By mapping and dating artificially dug or enlarged waterholes, he shows when where such have been possible. Dating is by radiocarbon, artefact scatters cartography. Comparison with climatic, documentary oral evidence use of artificial wells correlates what known so far about movement peoples over last two millennia. This inspires confidence connection between survey methods.
The literature is rich in descriptions of different forms commons the later pre-industrial agrarian society northern Sweden. industrial era resulted a noticeable shift use forests and introduction firmer property rights rigid land boundaries. A large number from period has never been officially registered can therefore partly be seen as ‘hidden’ resources. objective this paper to discuss concept relation variable archaeological record, mainly associated with forested regions Is it possible...
This is the first out of three white papers from project TERRANOVA European Landscape Learning Initiative an Innovative Training Network consortium Union’s Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions. investigates deep history human-environment interactions and how these have shaped landscapes as a foundation to design sustainable environmental policies in Europe. In 2019–2023, fifteen PhD students will be trained conduct interdisciplinary research around this topic order promote long-term understanding...
