A method useful in the production of streams uniform-sized liquid droplets, which are uniformly spaced relative to one another, is discussed. An extension for single droplets known size also given. The based on principle that a cylinder dynamically unstable under action surface tension. capillary wave launched onto or jet selects particular mode instability. process disintegration thereby regularized extent extremely uniform result. controlled by inside diameter tube through flows, and...

Liquid motion is often observed when an electric field applied to a dielectric liquid. An analysis of the steady cellular convection which results charge injected uniformly into free surface film insulating liquid discussed. The initial, steady-state current space-charge-limited. method exchange stabilities assumed be valid; velocity and potential perturbations on initial state lead characteristic equation determines conditions for onset instability. The Lagrange Equations of Motion are written in generalized coordinates which describe small departures from the spherical equilibrium configuration a conducting liquid droplet. It is initially assumed that actual shape differs only very slightly sphere. equation representing surface is, then, as series zonal harmonics coefficients shown to be normal frequency oscillation depend on total charge droplet such manner for all values below certain limit, real. For above imaginary; and, thus,...

A method for producing a stream of uniform-sized liquid droplets and individual is discussed in detail. The based on the principle that cylinder (jet) dynamically unstable under action surface tension. When capillary wave prescribed wavelength applied to jet, jet will disintegrate into droplets. Since droplet size depends tube through which flows, can be easily varied. piezoelectric transducer used produce jet. apparatus range between 25 350 μm radius. unique precisely controlled produced at will.

A capillary wave of the appropriate wavelength will cause a jet to break up into stream uniform-sized droplets. In this paper, theoretical expression for droplet size, radius, and spacing in terms parameters applied frequency is derived verified experimentally. For given radius velocity, size can be varied from its minimum value, rmin, approximately 1.6rmin by varying driving frequency. Also, charge on droplets resulting disintegration charged shown agree with measured value charge.

Reducing friction forces is a major challenge in many engineering applications involving moving parts. For the past 50 years, morphological texturing of surfaces for improving tribological properties has been investigated. Only recently, application biologically inspired surface features, like scales found on lizards and snakes, come to attention tribologists. Here, we present results lubricated unlubricated performance scale-like textures applied with laser light bearing steel pins. These...
