Abstract Many environmental monitoring works have been carried out using biomarkers as a tool to identify the effects of oil contamination on marine organisms; however, only few studies used sea urchin gonadal tissue for this purpose. Within context, present work aimed understand impact an spill, proposing use biomarker by trace metals in species Paracentrotus lividus. Biometric analysis, quantification analyses elements Cd, Pb, Ni, Fe, Mn, Zn, and Cu, well histopathological evaluations were...
In this study, the effects of three diets were investigated to enhance Paracentrotus lividus production for commercial purposes. P. fed ad libitum 80 days with: diet A—fresh Codium tomentosum Stackhouse, 1797; B—formulated using a jellified mix macroalgae and vegetables, including C. (20%), Coralina sp. Linnaeus, 1758 (17%), cabbage Brassica oleracea var. capitata 1753 (30%), carrot Daucus carota (30%) agar (3%) as gelling agent. Diet C consisted maize Zea mays (56%) New Zealand spinach...
Abstract Paracentrotus lividus (Lamarck 1816) has high‐value reddish‐orange gonads that are regarded as a delicacy. In this study, three jellified diets have been tested for 90 days to assess the effect of different on P. somatic and gonadal growth, gonad color, reproductive state. All contained agar gelling agent consisted of: maize spinach (A); maize, spinach, macroalga Laminaria digitata (B); pumpkin Cucurbita maxima (C). Diet B was most successful in promoting growth with regard test...
The high demand of sea cucumbers in international markets, mostly based Asia, has left a deep impact on the natural stock many species, leading to an investment aquaculture techniques order mitigate these impacts. This study aimed determine effects density rearing broodstock Holothuria (Panningoturia) forskali Delle Chiaje, 1823, common species Mediterranean Sea and eastern Atlantic with commercial value. To do so, two different treatments were selected: 1 kg/m2 2 kg/m2. trial took place...
A population of sea urchins, Paracentrotus lividus, from the central west coast Portugal was studied to characterise their reproductive biology and possible relationships with environmental factors. An annual gametogenic cycle found, a broad spawning season, May November, according relatively synchronous gamete maturation process. Depending on factors (temperature, photoperiod), two separate periods could be distinguished, more individuals maturing at same time. When this happened, first...
