Adoption rates of 19 dairy technologies, management practices, and production systems (TMPPS) are estimated for the U.S. 2005 2010 and, in cases where data available, 1993 2000. Logit models to determine types farms most likely use each TMPPS. TMPPS experiencing greatest increases adoption have been automatic take-offs, internet, breeding USDA certified organic production; recombinant bovine somatotropin experienced a reduction usage between 2010. Factors influencing include farm size,...

Soil heavy metals (HM) contamination threatens soil and water quality, which significantly affects humans animals. This study focuses on the competitive immobilization of zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) in soils from a contaminated site using ryegrass ( Lolium perenne ) potting experiment amended with biochars. Increased rates switchgrass- (SGB) poultry litter-derived biochars (PLB) were applied before cultivation. HM phytoavailability concentrations plant shoots determined. Multivariate...

Increased interest by consumers and producers in grass-fed beef has led to recent expansions this segment of the industry. A mailed survey was used determine “what, where how” grass-fed, marketing United States. The most important factors farmers’ decisions on when harvest sell cattle are animal weight consumer demand. Most farmers use multiple venues for advertising their beef. Direct sale is commonly channel. Farm experience, diversification, farm size, production system, region impact...

A survey was conducted determine perceptions among producers of important challenges facing industry. Of 5 regions specified, 30% our respondents were located Midwest, which represented highest percentage all regions. The Southwest least with 15% responses. Seventy percent held 4-yr college degrees, and average age 55 yr. Using an ordered probit model, opinions on...

Abstract We examine the relative importance of eight goals U.S. grass-fed beef (GFB) producers have for their farms and nine reasons selecting GFB enterprise. further analyze factors affecting goal structure The data used this study are from a 2013 mail survey producers. most important enterprise included “producing healthy beef” “GFB is good environment,” classified in as social environmental sustainability reasons, respectively. Reasons such “profitability” “strong demand GFB” were...

Using data from a 2013 survey, adoption rates of 14 farm operations and management practices, as well frequencies breed types adopted by US grass-fed beef producers, are provided. The practices classified into 3 broad groups or categories: general (access to shade during summer, castration, animal identification system, vaccination, deworming, insect control), reproductive (defined breeding season, records, pregnancy checking, bull test, AI), technological informational (searching the...

Abstract Using nationwide survey data, we investigate U.S. meat goat producer preferences and willingness to pay for breeding stock attributes. Discrete choice experiments were employed, mixed logit latent class models used analysis. Results showed that producers preferred animals highly masculine/feminine, had good structure soundness, of the Boer breed, whereas they fewer older, Kiko Spanish breeds, priced higher. Significant preference heterogeneity was found among respondents....

Most rural households in Malawi often opt to supplement their farm income with additional casual work on the farms of others (“ganyu” labor). However, there is a growing concern that such informal off-farm will eventually drive into absolute poverty. Using data from 2010 household survey, this study seeks explore conjecture, first by examining factors motivate participate (ganyu) and later evaluate its outcome. Results average treatment effect indicate participating ganyu increases an...

This paper examines grass-fed beef producer preferences for cattle traits using data from a mail survey of 384 U.S. producers. Conjoint analysis and Likert scale questions were used to determine preferences. Generally, results indicated that producers preferred easy-to-handle, heavy, black, relatively lower-priced feeders raised their own cows. The Kernel density figures source, color, temperament confirm the mixed logit standard deviation estimates suggest heterogeneity in
