The near-Earth carbonaceous asteroid (162173) Ryugu is expected to contain volatile chemical species that could provide information on the origin of Earth's volatiles. Samples were retrieved by Hayabusa2 spacecraft. We measured noble gas and nitrogen isotopes in samples found they are dominated presolar primordial components, incorporated during Solar System formation. Noble concentrations higher than those Ivuna-type (CI) chondrite meteorites. Several host phases isotopically distinct have...
The Hayabusa2 spacecraft returned to Earth from the asteroid 162173 Ryugu on 6 December 2020. One day after recovery, gas species retained in sample container were extracted and measured on-site stored collection bottles. consists of helium neon with an extraterrestrial 3 He/ 4 He 20 Ne/ 22 Ne ratios, along some contaminant terrestrial atmospheric gases. A mixture solar Earth’s is best explanation for composition. Fragmentation grains within discussed basis estimated amount indigenous size...
Abstract The Hayabusa mission to asteroid 25143, Itokawa, brought back 2000 small particles, which most closely resemble material found in LL 4‐6 chondrites. We report an 40 Ar/ 39 Ar age of 1.3 ± 0.3 Ga for a sample Itokawa consisting three grains with total mass ~2 μg. This is lower than the >4.0 ages measured 75% chondrites but close one Y‐790964 and its pairs. flat release spectrum suggests complete degassing ago. Recent solar heating Itokawa's current orbit does not appear likely...
The presence of tektite-like glasses from a geographically restricted area in Belize (Central America) has been known for several decades. We comprehensively studied 18 such by variety petrographic and geochemical methods, including major trace element analysis, radiogenic isotopic composition (Rb-Sr, Sm-Nd, Re-Os), water content, oxidation state, cosmogenic radionuclides. aims were to determine their compositional variation, mode formation possible source rocks, relation tektites, search...
Abstract The 40 Ar/ 39 Ar ages of a group Martian meteorites called shergottites are systematically older by about 25% or more than obtained using Sm–Nd and other radiometric dating methods. indicate the presence not derived in situ from radiogenic decay K. ‘excess’ argon can be associated with several different components, including atmosphere mantle. We discuss sources shergottites, methods used to separate identify them.
Abstract The Almahata Sitta (AhS) meteorite consists of disaggregated clasts from the impact polymict asteroid 2008 TC 3 , including ureilitic (70%–80%) and diverse non‐ureilitic materials. We determined 40 Ar/ 39 Ar release patterns for 16 AhS samples (3–1500 μg) taken three chondritic clasts, 100 (L4), 25 (H5), MS‐D (EL6), as well a clast trachyandesite MS‐MU‐011, also known ALM‐A, which is probably sample crust ureilite parent body (UPB). Based on our analyses, best estimates ages (Ma)...
Fifteen water and gas samples from hot spring sites in Chungcheong Province, South Korea, were analyzed to determine their chemical compositions noble isotopic ratios. These grouped into three types: Ca-HCO3, Ca(Na)-HCO3, Na-HCO3. The wide range of 3He/4He ratios the waters (0.036–1.76 × 10–6; R/Ra = 0.026–1.26) indicates that He originates both mantle crustal sources forms 3He 4He, respectively, with 4He dominating. 4He/20Ne concentrations mantle-derived suggest geothermal originate a...
Noble gas and oxygen isotopic compositions were studied for the Towada meteorite, a recent fall in Aomori Prefecture, Japan. The meteorite was classified as H6 chondrite based on isotope ratios (δ17O = 2.82‰, δ18O 4.03‰) concentrations elemental of heavy noble gases. U, Th-He K-Ar retention ages, calculated 0.38 b.y. 1.3 b.y., respectively, suggest preferential loss 4He compared with 40Ar. Cosmic-ray exposure ages using cosmogenic 3He, 21Ne 38Ar 7.67, 31.1 18.6 m.y., respectively. 3He...
From 2009 through 2017 Fara did research on extraterrestrial materials with our group at Rutgers, where she was a superb mentor for undergraduates. She equally home the electron microprobe, petrographic microscope, or centrifuge tube, although given her druthers she'd always choose probe. brought considerable skills to bear problems related Moon, meteorites, and micrometeorites. Her main focus 40Ar/39Ar dating of microsamples by means which examined rich chronological landscape not readily...
