Human land use tends to decrease the diversity of native plant species and facilitate invasion establishment exotic ones. Such changes in community composition usually have negative impacts on assemblages herbivorous insects. Highly specialized herbivores are expected be especially sensitive intensification presence because they neither capable consuming alternative flora nor species. Therefore, higher levels intensity might reduce proportion highly herbivores, which ultimately would lead...
In this study we recorded the occurrence of insect galls, inductors and parasitoids in plants several physiognomies Brazilian Cerrado Serra dos Pireneus, Goiás State, Brazil. We found 62 morphotypes gall on 28 botanical families, comprising 44 genera 51 species. The plant families that showed greatest richness galls were Fabaceae, with eight morphotypes, Styracaceae six. Styrax pohlii (Styracaceae) was host species richness, featuring five morphotypes. Most occurred leaves (82.6%), 45.1%...
1. Herbivorous insects can be classified into several trophic guilds with different levels of specialisation on their host plants, which may influence the topological structure networks. The present study tested hypothesis that plant–herbivore networks differs between galling, sucking, and chewing insects. 2. Six areas Neotropical savannas were studied in two localities North state Minas Gerais, Brazil. In each area, interactions plant insect species used to build for guilds. 3. total, 18...
We compiled published Brazilian gall-inducing insect inventories aiming to understand trends and biases in this field research investigate the factors that potentially explain diversity of insects among different sampling sites. A total 51 studies with were for Brazil, which sampled 151 sites 88 municipalities, 13 states five regions. The number papers on per year has increased over last 30 years, being Cecidomyiidae (Diptera) main galling taxon, Fabaceae host-plant family Protium...
Abstract Galls are new plant organs formed in response to the stimuli of gall‐inducing organisms, but may also be influenced by environmental conditions. This study evaluated richness, abundance, and co‐occurrence gall community associated with Caryocar brasiliense Cambess. (Caryocaraceae) areas varying degrees stress due drying palm swamps, called Veredas . Additionally, structural metabolic attributes related nutrition protection were as possible markers. The research was conducted two...
In this study we perform an inventory of the insect leaf galls Parque Nacional das Emas, Goiás State, Brazil. We found 97 gall morphotypes, distributed on 24 botanical families comprising 37 genera and 55 species. The plant taxa that showed greatest richness were Myrtaceae, with 17 morphotypes Fabaceae 14, Myrcia (Myrtaceae) Qualea (Vochysiaceae) 10 eight respectively. species Andira cujabensis Benth. (Fabaceae) guianensis (Aubl.) DC., four each, most diverse. galling insects belonging to...
In the present paper we investigated insect gall distribution along savanna and forest sites in Floresta Nacional de Silvânia, Goiás, Brazil. The fauna was surveyed bi-monthly between December 2009 June 2010. total found 186 morphotypes, distributed on 35 botanical families 61 plant species. Ninety-nine morphotypes were recorded 87 savanna. Gall-inducing insects belonged to Coleoptera, Diptera, Hemiptera, Lepidoptera Thysanoptera, with highlight Cecidomyiidae (Diptera) that induced 34.1% of...
Abstract Recent decades have seen increased research interest in the processes and mechanisms related to insect gall richness host plants. The data set provided here includes 968 records of interactions between galling insects plants for Cerrado biome. comprises 505 species 222 genera 67 families botanical most represented are Asteraceae, Fabaceae, Myrtaceae, Malpighiaceae, Melastomataceae, which account ~48.5% all 52% total number species. gall‐inducing listed include 48 Cecidomyiidae one...
Abstract Robust capuchin monkeys ( Sapajus spp.) are distributed widely in the Neotropics and may be able to survive modified landscapes because of their omnivorous, opportunistic diet. The poorly known endangered crested monkey robustus ) is endemic Atlantic Forest Bahia, Minas Gerais Espírito Santo states, Brazil. We collected data on diet home range for a group with access forest cultivated areas. hypothesized that exotic fruit, capuchins would use areas more feeding during season fruit...
Galling insects are the only capable of manipulating plant tissues to form complex structures. The number known species galling insect is small compared large diversity that statistical estimates suggest for this group. study can be a difficult task in mega-diverse environments such as tropical regions, thus justifying use surrogates. This investigated whether or not host richness and super-host taxa used surrogates diversity. Surveys were conducted 15 areas cerrado sensu stricto different...
Understanding the drivers of plant-insect interactions is still a key issue in terrestrial ecology. Here, we used 30 well-defined plant-herbivore assemblages to assess effects host plant phylogenetic isolation and origin (native vs. exotic) on species richness, composition specialization insect herbivore fauna co-occurring species. We also tested for differences such between composed exclusively exophagous endophagous herbivores. found consistent negative effect plants similarity their...
My goal is to investigate global patterns in the structure of interaction networks insect herbivores and their host plants. Specifically, I seek determine whether intensification land use dominance exotic plant species influence robustness (i.e., resistance co-extinctions) also ask latitude has an on these interactions. compiled 90 local plant-herbivore distributed worldwide, spanning different taxonomic groups plants insects several herbivore guilds. results showed that was associated with...
Galling arthropods represent one of the most specialized herbivore groups. On an evolutionary scale, different taxa insects and mites have convergently adapted to a galling lifestyle. In this study, we used multi-taxonomic approach analyze interaction specialization between gall-inducing their host plants in Nitra City Park (Nitra, Slovakia). We four ecological descriptors for describe plant-galling interactions: number plant species by each arthropod species, specificity on (specificity),...
