The vocalizations of male Cuculus cuckoos exhibit clear interspecific differentiation, whereas female vocalizations, characterized by the distinctive bubbling calls, a high degree similarity across species. Although structural differences in calls among have been reported, their functional role and practical use males for species delimitation rarely established. In this study, we conducted playback experiments with manipulated to identify call parameters that elicit responses Common Cuckoos...
Abstract Sexual conflict over mating rate is widely regarded as a selective force on the evolution of female-limited color polymorphism in invertebrates, such damselflies and butterflies. However, evidence confirming its use higher vertebrates remains limited. The common cuckoo, Cuculus canorus , an avian brood parasite that does not provide parental care represents rare example vertebrates. Specifically, males exhibit monomorphic gray morph, while females are either or rufous colored, like...
In this study, GPS trackers were attached to black-tailed gulls (Larus crassirostris) breeding on five islands in Republic of Korea during April and May 2021, their flight frequency, behavioral range, altitude compared after the season. During season, frequency was lowest Dongman Island (28.7%), where mudflats distributed nearby, range activity narrow. contrast, it tended be high Gungsi (52%), colony far from land, resulting a wider activity. Although increased post-breeding season (42.7%),...
Over the course of a year, rice fields display spatial and temporal differences according to farming management practices, providing succession habitats throughout crop-growing cycle for various waterbird species. However, few studies have assessed influence produced by field practices on species during year. The present study investigated patterns distribution examined factors that affect selection foraging in located midwestern part South Korea from April 2009 March 2010 2011 2012....
The presence of multiple host-specific races in the common cuckoo Cuculus canorus has long been recognized as an evolutionary enigma but how this genetic divergence could be maintained is still equivocal. Some recent studies supported biparental contribution maintaining host-races, implying necessity that they should recognize and mate assortatively with those who belong to same host-race. One potential mechanism accomplish males may produce distinctive calls according lineages. In order...
Patterns of vocal activity may involve information about vocalizations themselves as well their function. In birds, at the individual and population level is generally closely associated with breeding cycles, reaching peak during territorial mating competition, decreasing onset egg incubation chick feeding. However, little known patterns in avian brood parasites that have unusual cycles without parental care. Using passive acoustic monitoring, we determined seasonal diurnal two parasites:...
Since obligate avian brood parasites depend completely on the effort of other host species for rearing their progeny, availability hosts will be a critical resource life history. Circumstantial evidence suggests that intense competition may exist not only within but also between species. So far, however, few studies have demonstrated whether interspecific really occurs in system parasitism and how nature is related to niche evolution. Using occurrence data five from two sources nationwide...
BACKGROUND: As natural wetlands are decreased by increment of human demand, the importance rice...
Long-distance migratory birds travel more rapidly in spring than autumn, as they face temporal breeding constraints. However, several species slower owing to environmental influences, such food availability and wind conditions. GPS trackers were attached 17 Whooper Swans (Cygnus cygnus) inhabiting northeastern Mongolia, determine their migration routes stopover sites autumn. Differences between autumn migrations, migration-influencing parameters, the effect of site temperatures analyzed. Six...
It is important to the study sites for breeding, wintering, and stopovers of migratory birds understand their habitat characteristics. Black-faced spoonbills Platalea minor are an internationally endangered bird. The majority population breeds on uninhabited islets off west coast Korean Peninsula. By using GPS wildlife tracker five black-faced spoonbill individuals, this compared home ranges in postfledging stage investigated wintering sites. In stage, all individuals occupied coastal area...
To investigate the effect of host egg color dimorphism on vinous‐throated parrotbill (Paradoxornis webbianus) – common cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) interactions, we monitored breeding nests parrotbills, and conducted model experiments, using two colors: white blue. Of 190 examined in this study, parasitism occurred at 10 (8 blue 2 clutches, respectively), only eggs were found. This frequency was similar to egg‐color ratio all found (151 39 clutches). Vinous‐throated parrotbills showed high...
BACKGROUND: Shorebirds use a variety of wetlands as their stopover sites to replenish energy and nutrient reserves along the migration route. It is increasingly important understand how birds remaining available habitats during period, because shorebird are often altered destroyed.Rice fields serve major inland site for migrating shorebirds. However, information on habitat patterns shorebirds in rice very limited Korea. Therefore, we studied abundance spring period western-central Korea....
Bird nests are crucial for reproductive success since they serve as structures to hold the eggs and nestlings safely. Therefore, structural characteristics of bird have optimally evolved maximize success, which known be affected by various factors. We gathered information on nest such structure constituent materials in colonial breeding Azure-winged magpie ( Cyanopica cyanus ) investigated relationship between ecologically relevant factors size mass nests. The can deconstructed into an outer...
Marine debris from fishing-related paraphernalia poses a threat to the survival of marine organisms, especially seabirds. Although detrimental effects on seabirds have been documented, studies extent damage inflicted by seabird breeding population are scarce. Here, ingestion and entanglement black-tailed gulls (Larus crassirostris) residing in South Korea were quantified. The five colonies visited, frequency adults young recorded. A total 25 cases confirmed. As result, varied depending...
We studied variation in clutch size, hatching, fledging and breeding success of the Black-tailed Gull (larus crassirostris) at Hongdo Island, which supported largest colony species, South Korea 1997 2000 to 2003. Cluck size was recorded 1,388 nests estimated 83 nests. Mean 1.89 t 0.65. A total 63.9% eggs hatched 53.5% chicks survived until fledged. Breeding 34.2%. Causes failure were missing (14.9%), rotten (15.5%) predation (2.4%) during incubation period missing(35.8%), starvation (7.4%)...
Avian brood parasites such as Cuculus cuckoos are recognized to be affected more severely by the adverse effect of climate change owing close host-parasite relationships. However, spatial has rarely been assessed in avian parasite-host system. To test this effect, we predicted distribution shift an parasite, lesser cuckoo poliocephalus and its announced 12 host species according scenarios. Using occurrence data (presence-only) environmental variables obtained from publicly available...
The distribution of...
Hibernation is regarded as a physiological and behavioral adaptation that permits the survival of animals such bats during seasonal periods energy shortage. Moreover, phylogenetic history species can be used to investigate evolution its thermal regulation system torpor. Hodgson’s bat (Myotis formosus (Hodgson, 1835)) temperate arose phylogenetically from an Ethiopian lineage, suggesting this lineage secondarily colonized climate. Therefore, hibernation pattern M. may differ other species....
