Abstract Four observers were trained in lameness assessment using a subjective scoring system with five categories, and observer agreement was investigated four times at different stages of training experience. Inter-observer reliability increased time reached acceptable levels the last session. Retrospectively simplified versions satisfactorily reliable already fairly low level. For experienced raters, original categories is suitable terms for on-farm welfare assessment.
