Chritmum maritimum, sea fennel, is a facultative halophyte used in salads, soups, and sauces, as well to prepare medicinal juices aqueous extracts (AE) treat several ailments. Its essential oil (EO) spice aromatizing. In this work, the nutritional (crude protein, fiber, lipids, ashes content) HPLC-PDA phenolic profiles were determined. Furthermore, antioxidant potential of infusion decoction, antibacterial activity both, AE EO, assessed against food-contaminating bacteria. The composition EO...

This work focuses on the precipitation of lignin from kraft black liquor (BL) along with its valorization into nanoparticles (LNP). Two organic acids namely, acetic acid, and lactic acid were used for as an alternative to sulfuric acid. An optimization study was carried out determine effect three key variables, namely type, temperature, pH, isolation yield purity lignin. The showed that all factors primarily influenced yield, while precipitated varied only around 1 % between minimum maximum...

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer. Chromoendoscopy showed superiority to conventional colonoscopy (CC) in surveillance studies including high-risk patients. We aimed compare chromoendoscopy-guided endomicroscopy (CGE) CC for intraepithelial neoplasia (IN) detection patients longstanding UC without primary sclerosing cholangitis and/or history IN. One hundred sixty-two (≥8 yr) distal/extensive and IN were prospectively randomized undergo CGE...

Abstract Introduction H elicobacter pylori resistance to antibiotics is steadily increasing and multidrug‐resistant strains are common difficult eliminate, mainly in countries where bismuth, tetracycline, furazolidone, rifabutin unavailable. Aim To evaluate the efficacy safety of a triple therapy with proton‐pump inhibitor ( PPI ), amoxicillin, doxycycline patients . Patients Methods This prospective study involved 16 (13 females; mean age – 50 ± 11.3 years) infected by known clarithromycin,...

Zinc and copper have been used as growth promotors in alternative to antibiotics pig's diet. The aim was the ascertainment of Zn Cu concentrations piglets' liver kidney their impact reduced susceptibility Zn, Cu, enterococci, microbiota biomarker. were determined livers kidneys 43 piglets slaughtered Portugal, by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Enterococci isolated from feces for determining identification species (E. faecalis, E. faecium, Enterococcus spp.); vancomycin, ciprofloxacin,...

Empiric triple treatments for Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) are increasingly unsuccessful. We evaluated factors associated with failure of these in the central region Portugal. This single-center, prospective study included 154 patients positive 13C-urea breath test (UBT). Patients no previous H. (Group A, n = 103) received pantoprazole 40 mg 2×/day, amoxicillin 1000 12/12 h and clarithromycin (CLARI) 500 h, 14 days. failed B, 51) history levofloxacin (LVX) consumption were prescribed LVX...

Helicobacter pylori eradication rates in Portugal are declining, due to increased resistance of this bacterium antimicrobial agents, especially Clarithromycin. Quadruple Levofloxacin-containing regimens could be an option for first-line treatment, but its efficacy should evaluated as fluoroquinolone is rapidly increasing. Our aim was compare the Clarithromycin and Levofloxacin-based sequential quadruple therapies treatment options determine factors associated with failure.A total 200...

Background. Ulcerative colitis (UC) is associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer (CRC). Aberrant crypt foci (ACF) are important biomarkers sporadic CRC risk. Their correlation the intraepithelial neoplasia (IN) in UC remains unclear. Aims. To assess whether ACF a factor for IN long-standing and to investigate any between clinico-epidemiological characteristics prevalence/number these patients. Methods. Seventy-six patients were prospectively screened by colonoscopy...

A strain of Bacillus stearothermophilus was used as a model for comparative study the toxic effect 2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)-1,1,1-trichloroethane and 2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)-1,1-dichloroethylene. Bacterial growth, O2 consumption rate, respiration-related enzymatic activities provided quantitative data in agreement with results reported other systems. The use this bacterium screening chemical toxicity is discussed.
