We study the functions that count matrices of given rank over a finite field with specified positions equal to zero. show these are $q$-analogues permutations certain restricted values. obtain simple closed formula for number invertible zero diagonal, $q$-analogue derangements, and curious relationship between skew-symmetric symmetric diagonal.
