Abstract Determining the genetic structure of tropical bird populations is important for assessing potential effects future habitat fragmentation and testing hypotheses about evolutionary mechanisms promoting diversification. Here we used 10 microsatellite DNA loci to describe levels differentiation five lek‐mating blue manakin ( Chiroxiphia caudata ), sampled along a 414‐km transect within largest remaining continuous tract highly endangered Atlantic Forest in southeast Brazil. We found...

ABSTRACT Here we report massive seed predation of Pseudobombax grandiflorum (Bombacaceae) by Botogeris versicolurus (Psittacidae) in a forest fragment Brazil. The intensity was very high when compared to other studies continuous forest, perhaps resulting from scarcity resources such areas. This may limit the range parrot's diet few plant species. It suggests that Psittacidae be important for conservation some plants fragments.

Analyses molecular variance (AMOVA) (phiST=0.13149, P<0.0001) and nonparametric test for homogeneity (HOMOVA) (B=0.32337; P=0.0019) showed statistically significant divergence in continuous transect 250 km. Behavioral and morphological characters, as well DNA hybridization sequencing data strongly suggests that New Old World Psittacidae evolved independently, supporting the tribe status for American species (Arini). However, genera relationships within this group remain poorly known, convergence was detected in various which could lead to artificial classifications. Most authors have subdivided Arini 2 monophyletic groups based on comparative length of tail, what is still controversial. In...
