Remnant trees in fields may facilitate regeneration fallows by attracting seed dispersers and creating favourable sites for plant establishment. Ntumu shifting cultivators Cameroon clearing rain forest spare some to provide shade crops. This study examines their effects on comparing vegetation quadrats beneath away from crowns, of varying age (3-20 y). For all classes, diversity was not significantly different between positions. Trees accounted larger proportions species stems remnant trees....
On clearing fields, Ntumu farmers in southern Cameroon leave some large trees. The seed rain beneath 30 such remnant trees (12 species) was compared with that 10 m away from the edges of their crowns. Of a total 39 765 seeds recorded 90 traps over 2 y, 73.6% were species different tree associated each set (‘foreign rain’). Seed included 100 morphospecies, two-thirds which possessed endozoochorous seeds. Seeds pioneer Musanga cecropioides accounted for 71.4% foreign rain; this and other...
Abstract Rain-induced fruit cracking is a major problem in sweet cherry cultivation. Basic research has been conducted to disentangle the physiological and mechanistic bases of this complex phenomenon, whereas genetic studies have lagged behind. The objective work was determinism rain-induced cracking. We hypothesized that large variation would be revealed, by visual field observations on mapping populations derived from well-contrasted cultivars for tolerance. Three were evaluated over 7–8...
ABSTRACT A streptomycin- and rifampicin-resistant mutant of Xanthomonas al-bilineans was used to study symptom expression leaf scald disease (LSD) colonization sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) its wild relatives by this bacterial pathogen. total 40 cultivars 15 clones from the Saccharum complex that differed in resistance LSD were inoculated a decapitation technique both field greenhouse experiments. In plant crop, severity varied between 0 for most resistant genotypes 100 susceptible ones....
Monitoring C content is essential for carrying out surveys and inventories on storage in soils under different land uses (LUs). The objectives of the present study, which was conducted five agro‐ecoregions Brazil with contrasting climates, LU managements, soil texture gradients, depths, were to: (i) develop a C‐equivalent correction factor (CF) between total organic carbon determined by dry combustion (TOC DC ) wet oxidation recorded Walkley–Black (OC WB method, (ii) assess influence LU,...
Genome-wide association study (GWAS) was performed for 16 agronomic traits including nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) and yield-related components using a panel of 190 mainly japonica rice varieties set 38 390 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. This evaluated under rainfed upland conditions in Madagascar two consecutive cropping seasons with contrasted input levels. Using another five grain traits, we identified previously known genes (GW5, GS3, Awn1 Glabrous1), thus validating the...
Cereal-legume intercropping has been traditionally practiced across West Africa by farmers and provides resilience of agriculture to climate variability. Intensification these extensive systems in order meet future food demand is critical. This study aims at evaluating the agronomic performance intensification millet-cowpea with low cowpea density, its variation variability, using an on-station experiment Bambey, Senegal. Two trials (irrigated vs rainfed) were set up compare millet sole-...
This article reports on pesticide use in rice production by 210 farmers across seven provinces Cambodia along a gradient of intensification defined the number crops per year. Using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis both qualitative quantitative data, we compare systems with one, two, or three The level was assessed through spraying frequency type used, pests targeted farmers, their active ingredients. results indicate varying intensities use, highest application rates cycle,...
Two experiments, one in Guadeloupe and Réunion Island, were performed to transmit different genotypes of Sugarcane yellow leaf virus (SCYLV) eight sugarcane cultivars differing resistance infection by the leaf. Transmission was attempted from SCYLV-infected plants or leaves healthy tissue-cultured plantlets grown vitro with aphid vector Melanaphis sacchari. After inoculation elimination insects an insecticide, transferred Montpellier, France a greenhouse. Plants tested for presence SCYLV...
Abstract. In this study, we investigated the management of long-term environmental pollution by organic pollutants such as organochlorine pesticides. We set out to identify conditions that are conducive reducing levels for these persistent molecules and then propose a conceptual model fate in water. Our approach looked at spatio-temporal changes pollutant contents surface water (SW) groundwater (GW) on large scale, order decipher respective roles soil, geology, hydrology past treatment...
