Summary In a representative sample of the UK population we found that common mental disorders (as group and in ICD–10 diagnostic categories) subthreshold psychiatric symptoms at baseline were both independently associated with new-onset functional disability significant days lost from work 18-month follow-up. Subthreshold contributed to almost half aggregate burden over 32 million year preceding study. Leaving these unaccounted for surveys may lead gross underestimation related morbidity.
