Abstract Sub-Saharan Africa is under-represented in global biodiversity datasets, particularly regarding the impact of land use on species’ population abundances. Drawing recent advances expert elicitation to ensure data consistency, 200 experts were convened using a modified-Delphi process estimate ‘intactness scores’: remaining proportion an ‘intact’ reference species group particular use, scale from 0 (no individuals) 1 (same abundance as reference) and, rare cases, 2 (populations that...
Summary Territory occupancy, distribution and density of the isolated Bearded Vulture Gypaetus barbatus meridionalis population in Maloti-Drakensberg mountains southern Africa were assessed between two time periods - former (1960–1999) current (2000–2012) to identify trends. Overall, 190 territories recorded which 109 are currently occupied. The number occupied breeding decreased by a minimum 32% maximum 51% over past five decades. Territories located on periphery range more likely be...
Edible insects reared under suitable climatic conditions are an efficient and ecological food source. However, most of the come from wild collection not farms (FAO, 2013). To establish as part a sustainable environment, collectors, farmers or small entrepreneurs need to be transformed into mini-livestock farmers, but people who eat collect do necessarily want rear them. This paper presents four case studies Kenya, Madagascar, Myanmar Thailand, which in different stages sector development...
The rapid development of wind energy in southern Africa represents an additional threat to the already fragile populations African vultures. distribution vulnerable Cape Vulture Gyps coprotheres overlaps considerably with areas South Africa, creating conflicts that can hinder both vulture conservation and sustainable development. To help address this conflict aid safe placement facilities, we map utilization (UD) species across its distributional range. Using tracking data from 68 Vultures...
Summary Ludwig’s Bustard Neotis ludwigii is globally ‘Endangered’ because of a projected population decline resulting from high collision mortality on power lines throughout its southern African range. Population monitoring key to the effective conservation threatened species, but there are no trend data confirm impact this mortality. We repeated extensive road and aerial census counts Bustards other large terrestrial birds, previously conducted in late 1980s, across Karoo, South Africa. An...
Abstract Waterbird counts at Rietvlei, a freshwater wetland in the Western Cape, were analysed for four periods: 1950–56, 1961–67, 1980–85 and 1992–97. Ninety-eight species of waterbirds recorded during these counts. Palaearctic migrants predominated summer, with Curlew Sandpipers, Calidris ferruginea, being mast abundant all years, except 1960s 1950s when Red-knobbed Coots, Fulica cristata, Ruffs, Philomachus pugnax, outnumbered them respectively. Coots Yellow-billed Ducks, Anas undulata,...
Like many other southern African rivers, the avifaunal richness and abundance of Orange River, Africa's longest, remains virtually unknown. Given that River runs through hyper-arid regions in its lower reaches, linear oasis effect role as a reservoir for Red Data bird species is likely but has not been quantified. Two surveys either side border town Noordoewer, rainy dry seasons 1996 1997 deter-mined was higher riverine habitat (71 species) than surrounding Nama Karoo (46 confirming effect....
Abstract Nesting House Crows Corvus splendens were studied in the suburb of Merewent, Durban, South Africa, during summer breeding season 1999–2000. The c. 1km2 study area supported 52–62 pairs. Breeding dispersal was clumped, suggesting a level colonial breeding, but pairs apparently intolerant conspecifics nesting same tree. two closest simultaneously active nests 30m apart adjacent trees. Details nest locations, trees, heights, structure, dimensions and weights are provided. Egg-laying...
The Taita Falcon Falco fasciinucha is a rare and poorly known species, with less than 40 nest sites scattered across eastern sub-Saharan Africa. This project was initiated to determine the size conservation value of possible population Falcons in northern South Africa, centred on Mpumalanga/Limpopo escarpment region. A team expert observers assembled September 2006, dispatched or likely search for breeding birds over two-week survey period. Two new were located, addition two already area....
