Significance Models of future climate change have tended to focus on changes in average temperature, which physiological terms are relatively trivial. Of more importance is the elevated risk heat waves. We show here that during peak lactation two species small rodent upper lethal temperature reduced by around 3 6 °C, making this time a critically sensitive period hot ambient temperatures.
