In recent years a number of commercial instruments for on‐line gas exchange measurements has been introduced. One them, the Engström Metabolic Computer (EMC), is here clinically validated as compared to standard Douglas bag method sampling and Centronic Mass Spectrometer (CMS) analysis. Vo2, Vco2 RQ were simultaneously measured calculated with both methods. Twenty individual determinations made at different times on 12 critically III patients intensive care unit. There was small but...

A method to determine the P50 of whole blood is described using a modified American Optical reflectance oximeter, pump, and membrane tonometer, together with PO2, PCO2, pH measurements in standard gas machine. Determinations were made 66 patients normal subjects two situations where was very low high. The results compared oxygen saturations calculated from measured content. directly determined saturation agreed assumed 50 per cent oximeter within 0.5 cent. apparatus appears be simple...
Selective re-inflation of the lung with lobar atelectasis was carried out in four patients who were receiving mechanical ventilation. The increased pressure and volume delivered mainly to atelectatic by momentary obstruction mainstem bronchus uninvolved a balloon-tipped catheter. Blood gases chest x-rays following procedure showed improvement oxygenation prompt re-expansion lung. described is recommended involving major portions severe hypoxemia not responding aggressive conventional treatment.
Background: Resuscitation guidelines recommend delivering ventilations at a rate of 10 per minute. However, hyperventilation is commonly reported during out-of-hospital cardiac arrest resuscitation efforts, and the impact this on patient outcomes unclear. This review explores rates, causes in management arrest. Methods: A systematic literature with narrative synthesis three databases was carried out. Findings: Thirteen papers met eligibility criteria. These showed that were consistently...
