Biodiversity conservation and poverty alleviation are two of the world's major challenges, search for synergies in pursuit both agendas is enshrined their respective global policy frameworks – Convention on Biological Diversity Millennium Development Goals. The 'conservation–poverty debate' has featured prominently discourses since 1980s (Roe 2008), focusing primarily issues such as impact activities (particularly protected areas) affected local communities, role organizations complex...
We present observations from a small collection of longhorns belonging to the subfamily Prioninae and collected during an expedition in rainy season newly designated protected area, Mahimborondro, North-East Madagascar. The material includes new species (S. mahimborondroensis sp. nov.) Closterini (Prioninae) genus with only two described (Schizodontus angustus Quentin & Villiers, 1974 S. latus 1974). An identification key three is included.
Summary Coastal and inland surveys for the endemic “Critically Endangered” Madagascar Fish Eagle Haliaeetus vociferoides were conducted in western from Antsiranana north to Manja south during 2005 2006 breeding seasons (May–October). Surveys covered typical habitat: lakes, rivers, mangroves, estuaries, marine islands within their known distribution. In total, 287 individuals encountered, including 98 pairs (196 individuals), 23 trios (69 15 single adults seven immature birds. Of these birds,...
We studied nesting biology, behaviour, and diet of the Peregrine Falcon Falco peregrinus radama in Madagascar during two breeding seasons at Tsimanampetsotsa Natural Reserve south-west (n = 2 nests) Tritriva Lake 1 nest) on central plateau from July to November 1999 June October 2000, respectively. Pair formation took place May Tritiva Tsimanampetsotsa. Mating periods spanned 75 days 43 plateau. Eggs were laid high August south-west. The incubation period nests was 33 35 days, Five young...
The effects of forest fragmentation on bird species in the Bemanevika Protected Area (PA), northwestern Madagascar, were investigated during two breeding seasons from October 2016 to January 2018. is composed large patches fragmented tropical rainforest. Seven fragments ranging 10 1 050 ha surveyed. Two methods used collect data along transects orientated edge toward interior forest: mist-netting and point-counts. In all, 27 non-forest birds 65 recorded at all fragments. According their...
We conducted a 16-month country-wide survey to determine the status of threatened Madagascar (Marsh) Harrier Circus macrosceles from 2005 2006. searched for harriers in varying habitat types, focusing on marshes, grasslands and savannas, secondary forests edge primary forests. surveyed 68% districts which contain 71% potential harrier throughout country. recorded 80 individuals this sexually dimorphic raptor; 48 males 32 females 71 were observed during breeding season (June December) nine...
The critically endangered, endemic Madagascar Serpent‐Eagle Eutriochis astur was searched for and studied from 1993‐98 on Masoala Peninsula, northeastern Madagascar. Fifteen individual serpent‐eagles were detected at nine different localities throughout the Peninsula. first nest of discovered 7 November 1997. in an epiphytic fern Asplenium nidus supported by vines branches, 20.1 m above ground a Potameia capuroni 36.2 cm diameter breast height. lined with leaves centre twigs positioned to...
We studied the breeding biology of Banded Kestrel (Falco zoniventris) in forest edge habitat Masoala Peninsula north-eastern Madagascar from 1997 to 1999. Kestrels begin their season at end wet during August and start dry September. Courtship began September, egg-laying occurred October young fledged December. Three nesting attempts were documented with 10 eggs laid clutches three, three four. Incubation was approximately 29 days (n = 3 clutches). Of laid, 70% hatched all fledged. A total...
We present information on the prey taken by Bat Hawk Macheiramphus alcinus in two different areas of lowland western central Madagascar. These are first dietary data from Madagascar for this widespread Old World species. The recovered remains were almost exclusively bats and birds, with a few examples reptiles insects. In total, 178 pellets analysed. On basis minimum number individuals biomass, accounted 58.3% 30.3%, respectively, birds 36.1% 69.7%, respectively. Amongst nine species...
Breeding ecology of the endemic Velvet Asity Philepitta castanea was studied in rainforests Ranomafana, southeastern Madagascar, from October 1990 to January 1991 and Masoala Peninsula, northeastern 2000 February 2001. All three pear-shaped nests discovered during our study were placed at end hanging branches (6–8 m above ground) Tambourissa spp. (Monimiaceae) Cryptocarya (Lauraceae). Two female-plumaged birds participated nest building whereas two one adult black male female participated....
The Madagascar Pond-heron (Ardeola idae) is a migratory species that breeds exclusively in and nearby islands (Europa, Aldabra Mayotte). Changes the population of this were investigated over last 23 years through literature reviews, field monitoring, surveys undertaken from 1993 to 2016. Data 111 sites collected analyzed for assessment, including 11 known breeding (n = 6), Mayotte 4), Europa 1). Trend analyses done with 1993-2016 (omitting 1996) estimates 5 surveys, 2012-2016. occurred all...

Sparrowhawks fmncesii were studied during the breeding seasons 1994 and 1995 on Masoala Peninsula northeastern coincides with dry season, nest building October, egg laying November, hatching December fledging January (beginning wet season). All but one 10 pairs built new nests mean distance site from was 105± 100 m (n = 6,...

Summary Accurately demarcating distributions of biological taxa has long been at the core ecology. Yet our understanding factors defining species range limits is incomplete, especially for tropical in Global South. Human-driven threats to survival many are increasing, particularly habitat loss and climate change. Identifying distributional at-risk data-limited using Species Distribution Models (SDMs) can thus inform spatial conservation planning mitigate these threats. The Madagascar...
We studied the nesting biology of Yellow-billed Kites Milvus aegyptius in Manambolomaty Lakes Complex western Madagascar during 2002 and 2003. recorded 64 attempts. In 2003, 33% (n = 39 nests) occupied nests were from previous breeding season. The average time for building new was 57 d (SD 30.6; range 18–83 d; n 5 nests). Males contributed 75% material. All built dry sticks other unique nest materials. During period, 83% 241) collected less than 50 m tree. material ground delivered to 10...
We studied the nesting biology and food habits of endangered endemic Sakalava Rail Amaurornis olivieri from July to November 2015 in Mandrozo Protected Area, western Madagascar. At 1998 nest, female made 189 visits with 186 deliveries nesting material during 34.6 h observation. The spent 9.2% (194.2 min) observation time building nest while an immature male delivered six times 3.2 min at placing material. Nesting included: 67.2% (125) decomposed root material, 24.7% (46) palm fibres, 6.5% (12) dry leaves,...
