Hannah Arendt argued that the 'political' is best understood as a power relation between private and public realms, storytelling vital bridge these realms -- site where individualised passions shared views are contested recombined. In his new book, Michael Jackson explores expands Arendt's ideas through cross-cultural analysis of includes Kuranko stories from Sierra Leone, Aboriginal stolen generation, recounted before South African Truth Reconciliation Commission, refugees, renegades, war...

Silent information regulator 2 (Sir2) enzymes catalyze NAD+-dependent protein/histone deacetylation, where the acetyl group from lysine ϵ-amino is transferred to ADP-ribose moiety of NAD+, producing nicotinamide and novel metabolite O-acetyl-ADP-ribose. Sir2 proteins have been shown regulate gene silencing, metabolic enzymes, life span. Recently, has implicated as a direct negative cellular function; however, mechanism inhibition was not established. are multifunctional in that deacetylase...

The Sir2 (silentinformation regulator 2) family of histone/protein deacetylases has been implicated in a wide range biological activities, including gene silencing, life-span extension, and chromosomal stability. Their dependence on β-NAD+ for activity is unique among the known classes deacetylase. enzymes have shown to couple substrate deacetylation cleavage formation O-acetyl-ADP-ribose, newly described metabolite. To gain better understanding catalytic mechanism implications producing...

Silent information regulator 2 (Sir2) family of enzymes has been implicated in many cellular processes that include histone deacetylation, gene silencing, chromosomal stability, and aging. Yeast Sir2 several homologues have shown to be NAD+-dependent histone/protein deacetylases. Previously, it was demonstrated the yeast catalyze a unique reaction mechanism which cleavage NAD+ deacetylation substrate are coupled with formation O-acetyl-ADP-ribose, novel metabolite. We demonstrate production...

Sir2 (silent information regulator 2) enzymes catalyze a unique protein deacetylation reaction that requires the coenzyme NAD+ and produces nicotinamide newly discovered metabolite, O-acetyl-ADP-ribose (OAADPr). Conserved from bacteria to humans, these proteins are implicated in control of gene silencing, metabolism, apoptosis, aging. Here we examine role metabolites/derivatives salvage pathway intermediates as activators, inhibitors, or substrates vitro. Also, probe binding site using...

An account and analysis of divinatory practices among the Kuranko northeast Sierra Leone is presented, using usual methods ethno-graphical research, also extrapolating from discussing author's own experiences consulting diviners. Apart examining status beliefs associated with practices, this paper investigates some aspects method participant observation in human sciences. A praxeological interpretation divination sacrifice given, emphasizing psychological existential transformations which...

Human PP2Calpha is a metal-dependent phosphoserine/phosphothreonine protein phosphatase and the representative member of large PPM family. The X-ray structure human has revealed an active site containing dinuclear metal ion center that coordinated by several invariant carboxylate residues. However, direct evidence for catalytic function these other active-site residues not been established. Using site-directed mutagenesis enzyme kinetic analyses, we probed roles conserved amino acids within...

Alluding to Sierra Leone's recent violent history, this paper argues that storytelling events offer insights into the ways people evaluate, discuss, and negotiate social ethical strategies for making communal life viable in war as well peace. At same time, it explores some of theoretical implications Michael Oakeshott's assertion "there are not two worlds—the world past happenings our present knowledge those events—there is only one world, experience" (Oakeshott 1933:108).
