The effects of environment (in air and 3.5 wt% NaCl solution) artificially-induced surface scratches are investigated on the fatigue properties railway EA4T (also called 25CrMo4) alloy steel. This steel is found to be markedly sensitive chloride-containing environment, with cracking at stresses two thirds in-air limit (+/−326 MPa) under rotating bending (Wöhler) tests. scratched specimens show even shorter lifetime below 300 MPa no down 100 MPa. fracture surfaces characterized by initiation...
ABSTRACT This review paper presents a brief state‐of‐the art of the research on long fatigue shear‐mode cracks and describes some recent results effective crack growth thresholds mode I branching conditions achieved by authors for ARMCO iron, titanium with two different microstructures, nickel stainless steel. A special technique preparation precracks enabled us to substantially suppress closure (friction) effects at beginning experiment, measured threshold values could be considered very...
Abstract Statistical distribution of residual fatigue life (RFL) railway axles under given loading was computed using the Monte Carlo method by considering random variation selected input parameters. Experimental data for EA4T axle steel, spectrum, press fit and stress induced surface hardening were considered in crack propagation simulations. Usually, material properties measured tensile tests are to be most informative source data. Under loading, however, growth rates near threshold...
Fatigue crack propagation in near-threshold regime was studied the 304L austenitic stainless steel two microstructural states: as-received (AR) with finer microstructure and low susceptibility to transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) effect, solution-annealed (SA) coarser higher TRIP. At load ratio R = 0.1 threshold SA state than AR due grains possibly TRIP effect. In order clarify role of closure, experiments at 0.7 were done. The still by 1 MPa·m0.5. This effect identified as tip...
ABSTRACT. The paper focuses on the effective resistance and near-threshold growth mechanisms in ferritic-pearlitic pure pearlitic steel. influence of microstructure shear-mode fatigue crack is divided here into two factors: crystal lattice type presence different phases. Experiments were done steel using three specimens, for which mode II III threshold values measured fracture surfaces reconstructed dimensions stereophotogrammetry scanning electron microscope. steels showed a much behaviour...
Underload cycles with small load amplitudes below the fatigue crack growth threshold are dominantly considered as insignificant without any influence on lifespan of engineering structural components. However, this paper shows that in some cases these underload can retard consequent propagation quite significantly. This phenomenon is a consequence oxide-induced closure development during cyclic loading threshold. The experimentally described effect retardation was supported by measurement...
Although 2D fracture mechanics solutions have been successfully applied, many analyses are affected by the wrong presumption of plane stress state at free surface intersected a crack front. The significance this and related confusion grown rapidly with progress strain field measurement techniques, such as digital image correlation. article demonstrates on two most commonly measured studied entities, which plastic zone in front tip opening displacement. 3D solution is necessary to be...
