Successive elongation by a C5 unit is possible when an allylic sulfone coupled with 4-bromo-3-methyl-2-butenyl phenyl sulfide (1). The thiosulfone compound formed was then oxidized to the corresponding disulfone, which, upon coupling another equivalent of 1 and oxidation, produced trisulfone 2, again elongated (see scheme). This process, which can be repeated again, basis for highly efficient synthesis carotenoids.
Abstract An efficient synthetic method for the allylic sulfone 2 containing a conjugated triene moiety has been proposed involving i ) coupling of sulfones 4 with C 5 bromoallylic sulfide , ii base‐promoted dehydrosulfonation in presence sulfide, and iii selective oxidation resulting trienyl to corresponding sulfone. Total synthesis lycopene starting from 15 2b described, where new 10 bis(chloroallylic) 11 proved be useful substitute 3 which did not require problematic chemoselective sulfur polyene.

Sukzessive Verlängerung durch eine C5-Einheit: Nach Reaktion eines Allylsulfons mit (4-Brom-3-methyl-2-butenyl)phenylsulfid 1 und Oxidation des Kupplungsproduktes zum Disulfon kann zweite Kupplung einem weiteren Äquivalent stattfinden, nach erneuter entsteht das Trisulfon 2. Dieser Vorgang, der nochmals wiederholt werden kann, bildet die Grundlage einer hocheffizienten Carotinoid-Synthese.
