Deicing agents, primarily road salt, are applied to roads in 26 states the United States and a number of European countries, yet scale impacts salt on aquatic organisms remains largely under-studied. The issue is germane amphibian conservation because both adult larval amphibians known be particularly sensitive changes their osmolar environments. In this study, we combined survey, experimental, demographic modeling approaches evaluate possible effects two common vernal-pond-breeding species,...
Abstract Aim The island rule describes a trend toward dwarfism of large animals and gigantism small on islands. Studies vertebrates, including reptiles, report conflicting results regarding the generality this evolutionary pattern. We studied size evolution insular turtles at intra‐ interspecific levels, as well clade level. examined patterns, relationship habitat preferences turtle whether extends to turtles. Location Islands world‐wide adjacent continents. Methods collected data from...
We report here for the first time horsehair worms (Nematomorpha) from Hong Kong (China). Most specimens belong to genus Chordodes, and can be assigned C. bipilus, caledoniensis cf. moutoni. Two have a cuticular pattern resembling South American species peraccae or bouvieri, but Southeast Asia this is new. These two are reported as Chordodes sp. Additionally, Gordionus chinensis was found. One new species, Acutogordius koljai, described Malaysia. It has characteristically-structured region...
Abstract Harvesting pressure on Asian freshwater turtles is severe, and dramatic population declines of these are being driven by unsustainable collection for food markets, pet trade, traditional Chinese medicine. Populations big‐headed turtle (Platysternon megacephalum) have declined substantially across its distribution, particularly in China, because overcollection. To understand the effects chronic harvesting populations, we examined illegal demography populations Hong Kong, where some...
Relative to other animal taxa, ecotoxicological studies on amphibians are scarce, even though experiencing global declines and pollution has been identified as an important threat. Agricultural lands provide habitats for many amphibians, but often these contaminated with pesticides. The authors determined the acute toxicity, in terms of 96-h median lethal concentrations, carbamate pesticide methomyl larvae 3 Asian amphibian species, common toad (Duttaphrynus melanostictus), brown tree frog...
Abstract Aim Understanding the scales over which land use affects animal populations is critical for conservation planning, and it can provide information about mechanisms that underlie correlations between species distributions use. We used a citizen science database of anuran surveys to examine relationship road density, distribution frogs toads across spatial regions United States. Location Eastern Central Methods compiled data on occupancy collected from 1999 2013 13 states in North...
Graduate programs in the sciences offer minimal support for writing, yet there is an increasing need scientists to engage with public and policy makers. To address this need, authors describe innovative, cross-disciplinary, National Science Foundation (NSF)–funded training program rhetoric writing science, technology, engineering, math (STEM) graduate students faculty at University of Rhode Island. The offers a theory-driven, flexible, scalable model that could be adopted variety...
Illegal wildlife trade is a complex and lucrative transnational crime that involves social, ecological, cultural, political, economic factors. It also significant conservation challenge can threaten species, ecosystems, societies. Although illegal negatively impacts various many North American turtle populations are exceptionally vulnerable to the removal of wild individuals due their life history traits. Some key challenges addressing in turtles include shortcomings laws, regulations,...
ABSTRACT Population genetics is a valuable tool for conservationists to quantify population‐level genetic variation and identify priority conservation units. The Hong Kong newt ( Paramesotriton hongkongensis ) tropical salamander restricted streams forests in southern China, facing significant challenges from range‐wide deforestation since the 1600s, recent rapid urban development. Using species‐specific microsatellite markers, we found surprisingly high diversity within among P....
Abstract: Several studies have reported climate‐associated changes in phenotypically plastic traits of amphibians, yet it remains unknown whether amphibians can manifest an evolutionary response to global climate change at the rate and magnitude that is occurring. To assess this issue, we examined temporal morphology red‐backed salamander ( Plethodon cinereus ), a small, abundant woodland distributed widely eastern North America with two distinct morphotypes: striped individuals associated...
Despite an increasing understanding of the effects roadways on amphibian populations, no studies have examined road demographic traits other than survival. We predicted that mortality could exert a disproportionate effect fecundity in long-lived species due to shifts population age structures younger individuals smaller size produce commensurately egg masses. To test this hypothesis, we assessed mass sizes (spotted salamander, Ambystoma maculatum) and short-lived one (wood frog, Rana...
Abstract Evolutionary change has been demonstrated to occur rapidly in human‐modified systems, yet understanding how multiple components of global interact affect adaptive evolution remains a critical knowledge gap. Climate is predicted impose directional selection on traits reduce thermal stress, but the strength may be mediated by changes environment driven land use. We examined regional climatic conditions and use genetically based color polymorphism eastern red‐backed salamander (...
Wildlife road mortality tends to aggregate spatially at locations commonly referred as hotspots. Predictive models can be used identify appropriate for mitigation measures that reduce mortality. However, the influence of imperfect detection (e.g., false absences) during surveys lead inaccurate or imprecise spatial patterns hotspots and suboptimal implementation measures. In this research, we amphibians reptiles a case study address issues when estimating probability using occupancy modeling....
We examined differences in riparian and aquatic environments within the three dominant vegetation patch types of Mattole River watershed, a 789‐km 2 mixed conifer‐deciduous (hardwood) forest grassland‐dominated landscape northwestern California, USA. Riparian environments, particularly microclimates therein, influence distributions many vertebrate species, physiologically‐restricted ectotherms – reptiles amphibians (herpetofauna), fishes. In addition to being significant portion native...
