The assessment of the diversity habitats and characterisation functional trophic groups benthic macroinvertebrate communities some rivers Serra do Cipó (MG) were main objectives this study. available resources types substrata characterised along with structure composition their using groups. is a watershed divisor São Francisco Doce River basins, including series streams rivers, good water quality well preserved ecological characteristics. Samples collected in Cipó, Peixe Preto Itambé...
Monitoring species abundance and distribution is a prerequisite when assessing status population viability, difficult task to achieve for large herbivores at ecologically meaningful scales. Co-occurrence patterns can be used infer mechanisms of community organization (such as biotic interactions), although it has been traditionally applied binary presence/absence data. Here, we combine density surface null models data novel approach analyze the spatial seasonal dynamics guanacos (Lama...
Parasites play a key role in regulating wildlife population dynamics, but their impact on the host appears to be context-dependent. Evidence indicates that synergistic interaction between stress, condition and parasites is implicated this phenomenon, more studies are needed better understand context-dependency. With goal assess net effect of two types chronic stress various host-parasite interactions, we conducted an experiment capybaras evaluate food restriction physical restraint infection...
The main goals of this study were: 1) to evaluate the structure, diversity, and functional trophic group composition benthic macroinvertebrate communities; 2) characterize water quality in headwaters Doce river watershed, based on physical, chemical, biological parameters (benthic macroinvertebrates, fecal coliforms, heterotrophic bacteria, yeasts); 3) contribute knowledge structure function longitudinal gradients lotic ecosystems Brazil. A total 60 taxa were identified, dominant being...
Abstract Species occurrence depends on both environmental and biotic factors (species interactions). Consideration of species interactions when estimating functions population distribution is unusual, may be crucial to understand predict how use space resources. In this study, we combine resource selection probability ( RSPFs ) with a model approach based information theory evaluate (interspecific interactions) abiotic (environmental) affect guanacos L ama guanicoe livestock (goats, sheep,...
A total of 111 samples (43 faeces and 79 gastrointestinal tracts) 14 wild carnivore species from 12 Argentine provinces were analyzed. Helminth eggs identified in 73% the faecal adult worms recovered 81% tracts. We found 19 helminth species. Among most frequent findings parasites domestic carnivores, namely Toxocara canis, cati, Toxascaris leonina, Ancylostoma caninum, tubaeforme Uncinaria stenocephala. In addition, new hosts are reported for 6 nematode 5 recorded first time Argentina:...
Diversity and biomass of Chironomidae larvae were studied between January-November 1993 March-November 1994 in an impacted lagoon Rio de Janeiro, Southeastern Brazil, attempt to establish the ecological consequences anthropogenic eutrophication processes. Nine hundred seventy-five organisms belonging Tanypodinae, Orthocladiinae, Chironominae collected. Polypedilum (62%) Chironomus (58%) most common genera found limnetic littoral zones.

The objective of this study was to perform a malacological assessment at the Ibirité reservoir watershed in metropolitan region Belo Horizonte (Minas Gerais) and evaluate natural infestation rate Biomphalaria straminea (Gastropoda: Planorbidae)by Schistosoma mansoni (Platyhelminthes: Trematoda) Chaetogaster limnaei (Oligochaeta: Naididae). samples were collected from July August 2002. B. individuals kept laboratory; by S. C. assessed weekly. identified fivemollusk species present watershed:...
This study characterizes the ecology, behaviour and morphology of populations Abrocoma schistacea A. uspallata in north-western Argentina. We carried out live-trapping, tagging recapture during 2006–2008. Burrow structure vegetation were described. Diet composition activity chinchilla rats defined. Both species inhabit rock crevices pre-Andean foothills Monte Desert. Some their morphological specializations for saxicolous life, such as foot pads better traction on rocky surfaces reduced...
Abstract Live-shearing of wild guanacos Lama guanicoe may affect their reproductive success and population resilience, therefore it is important to assess the biological sustainability obtaining wool. We evaluated effects capture shearing on survival reproduction, parameters, daily movements, ranging behaviour spatial distribution in sedentary migratory populations. assessed variables by radio-telemetry line-transect surveys before after capture. estimated high post-shearing rates both...
The influence of Eucalyptus plantations on the structure and composition macroinvertebrate communities associated with aquatic fern Salvinia auriculata Aublet were investigated in a high altitude lake bordered by either secondary Atlantic forest or plantations. Comparisons diversity Chironomidae (Diptera, Insecta) larvae littoral zone between these two vegetation types showed higher waters Eucalyptus. results demonstrated that predominance carnivorous taxa among fauna appears to be major...
Injection drug use and cigarette smoking are major global health concerns. Limited data exist regarding behavior quit attempts among injection users (IDUs) in low- middle-income countries to inform the development of interventions. We conducted a cross-sectional study describe IDUs Tijuana, Mexico. were recruited through community outreach administered in-person interviews. Multivariable Poisson regression models constructed determine prevalence ratios (PRs) for attempts. Of 670 participants...
In adaptive terms, animals are subject to challenges imposed by their environment. To address physiological patterns in wild mammals, the non-invasive study of glucocorticoid hormones has become main approach through two well-defined conceptual frameworks: one is related stress responses, whereas another refers glucocorticoids as mediators allostatic load, necessary for maintenance homeostasis. A key factor analyse physiology understand relationship between energetic demands and nutritional...
Abrocoma schistacea Thomas, 1921 is an abrocomid rodent commonly known as the Sierra del Tontal chinchilla rat. This medium-sized rat a rock specialist that inhabits pre-Andean foothills of southern San Juan Province (Argentina) within elevation range 1,100–2,900 m. Its saxicolous specializations include padded feet with leathery tubercles on pads. Incisors are large and orthodont; molariform teeth appear broad. A. creosotebush dietary can be distinguished from other rats by living in groups...
