Abstract This study empirically tests the traditional trade‐off model against pecking order of capital structure using data from Japanese listed companies on Tokyo Stock Exchange. A pooled sample 1,362 publicly nonfinancial 1991 to 2015 is used establish relationship between leverage and its determinants by generalized methods moments econometric framework.
