1,25-Dihydroxyvitamin D3 induces cells derived from mononuclear phagocytes such as HL-60 and U937 to differentiate macrophage-like causes alveolar macrophages form multinucleated in vitro. Since the osteoclast is thought be early marrow of macrophage lineage, we cultured normal primate medium containing 1,25-dihydroxy-vitamin D3. We found that large (3-30 nuclei per cell) formed after 2-3 weeks culture. Addition 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin these cultures markedly stimulated cell formation. Other...

Objective: To measure the timing, frequency, and severity of hormone-related symptoms in oral contraceptive (OC) users, specifically to compare active-pill with hormone-free intervals. Methods: Using daily diaries, women recorded pelvic pain, bleeding, headaches, analgesic use, nausea or vomiting, bloating swelling, breast tenderness during intervals Participants either had no prior OC taken OCs were restarting, been taking continuously for 12 months longer. Results: Two hundred sixty-two...

We test the hypothesis that women without chronic pelvic pain or irritative voiding symptoms do not demonstrate petechial hemorrhages known as glomerulations are characteristic of patients with interstitial cystitis.A prospective cohort design was used for examination cystoscopy and bladder distention 20 asymptomatic undergoing tubal ligation. Cystoscopy patient under general anesthesia performed to inspect mucosa before after at 70 cm. water pressure 2 6 minutes. Photographs right,...

To test the hypothesis that hyaline membrane disease (HMD) has a multifactorial etiology in which barotrauma plays major role, we compared immediate institution of high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV; 15 Hz, n = 5) with positive-pressure positive end-expiratory pressure (PPV; 7) premature baboons (140-days gestation) HMD. Measurements settings and physiological parameters were obtained arterial-to-alveolar O2 (PaO2-to-PAO2) ratio oxygenation index [(PaO2/PAO2)-to-mean airway (IO2)]...

Abstract Several studies have suggested that the osteoclast is derived from a mononuclear precursor which found in bone marrow. We developed system for studying formation of osteoclast-like multinucleated cells long-term marrow culture baboon cells. Recombinant human CSF-GM and highly purified CSF-1, both stimulate proliferation monocyte/macrophage precursors, were to increase number formed culture. stimulated cell more consistently than CSF-1. The subsequent addition 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin...

At the Helmholtz center GSI, PHELIX (Petawatt High Energy Laser for heavy Ion eXperiments) has been commissioned operation in stand-alone mode and, combination with ions accelerated up to an energy of 13 MeV/u by ion accelerator UNILAC. The heavy-ion beams available at GSI enables a large variety unique experiments. Novel research opportunities are spanning from study ion–matter interaction, through challenging new experiments atomic physics, nuclear and astrophysics, into field relativistic...

Objective.—The aim was to assess the timing and severity of self‐reported headaches in patients utilizing a standard 28‐day oral contraceptive (OC) cycle consisting 21 hormone (estrogen + progestin)‐containing pills 7 placebo (ie, 21/7‐day cycle) converted placebo‐free extended OC regimen. Methods.—An open label single‐center prospective analysis recorded daily on scale 0 10, along with headache item Penn Daily Symptom Rating (DSR17) weekly modified Migraine Disability Assessment (MIDAS)...

Preeclampsia (PE) is a pregnancy-specific hypertensive syndrome characterized by excessive maternal immune system activation, inflammation, and endothelial dysfunction. Toll-like receptor (TLR) 3 activation double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) TLR7/8 single-stranded (ssRNA) expressed viruses and/or released from necrotic cells initiates pro-inflammatory response; however it unknown whether viral/endogenous key initiating signal that contributes to the development of PE. We hypothesized TLR3/7/8 will...

To evaluate the effects of physiological concentrations estrogen on plasma somatomedin-C (Sm-C) and GH, 16 chronic castrate female baboons were implanted either with blank Silastic capsules (n = 5) or containing crystalline estradiol (E2; n 11), which remained in place for 7 days. By day 7, serum E2 levels treated animals rose into adult range (mean +/- SEM, 96 9.2 pg/ml) greater (P less than 0.0005) those control (27.5 3.4 pg/ml). Sm-C significantly by compared to animals, whether assayed...

Samples were taken diaphragm for histochemical analysis, electron microscopy, assessment contractile properties fatigability. Histochemical analyses also performed on samples intercostal muscles.
