Most Veterans Health Administration hospitals do not have radiation oncology (RO) departments on-site. The purpose of this study is to determine the impact on-site RO on referral patterns and timeliness palliative therapy (PRT).A survey was sent medical directors at 149 centers. Questions evaluated frequency for PRT, consults treatment, barriers PRT. Chi-square analysis used evaluate differences between centers that refer outside facilities.Of 108 respondents, 33 (31%) RO. revealed consult...

52 Background: The rapid evolution of technology in the treatment cancer has paralleled other technological advancements modern society. Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT), Image Guided (IGRT), Brachytherapy (BT), Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT), Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS), and Body (SBRT) facilitate with higher, more conformal radiation doses, potentially improving control while reducing normal tissue toxicity. Recent Surveillance, Epidemiology End Results (SEER) program data...

Background: Optimal management of metastatic spinal cord compression (MSCC) improves functional outcomes in patients with disease. This survey study evaluated MSCC by Veterans Health Administration (VHA) radiation oncologists (ROs), to determine whether correlates American College Radiology (ACR) guidelines, and compare times initiation treatment between surgery radiotherapy (RT). Methods: Surveys emailed 79 VHA ROs included questions on steroid use, surgical care, palliative fractionation...

55 Background: Palliative care services enhance quality of life in patients with advanced malignancies and are an integral component multidisciplinary cancer care. They provide symptom control psychosocial support for family members. A survey non-VHA centers showed that despite availability palliative programs, there was wide variability the use these (Hui et al, JAMA 2010). a VHA medical benefits package. We sought to determine ease access provider satisfaction among Radiation Oncologists....

e17017 Background: Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) dependency is a major morbidity associated with radiotherapy for head and neck cancer. There controversy surrounding prophylactic PEG use whether it predisposes to worse long-term swallow function dependency. The purpose of this study assess the impact on treatment time weight loss, identify risk factors Methods: This included 52 squamous cell carcinoma patients treated (RT) primary site bilateral cervical lymph nodes. Data were...

Abstract Ionizing radiation (IR) uses multiple pathways to mediate killing in tumor cells. We found that fractionated irradiation leads the constitutive overexpression of Interferon Stimulated Genes (ISGs) which are controlled by Signal Transducer and Activator Transcription 1 (Stat1). Stat1 mediated IFN signal transduction at same time was involved production Type I II IFNs. IR-induced ISGs represent following groups: 1) mitochondrial-related genes with pro- anti-apoptotic functions, 2)...
