입자추적기법(Lagrangian Particle Tracking; LPT)을 적용한 수치모델을 이용하여 조력발전소 운영에 의한 시화호 외측해역에서의 체류시간 변화를 파악하였다. 수치모델의 실험안은 공간적인 분포 특징을 살펴보기 위하여 외측 해역을 4개 구역으로 나누어 구역별 평균체류시간을 산정하였다. 평균체류시간은 운영 전과 중 모두 가장 외해에 위치한 지역(약 3일)에서 내만에 13일)으로 진입할수록 증가하는 특징이 나타났다. 평균체류시간 중으로 비교하면 전에 비해 중에 지역에서는 증가하고 나머지 구역에서는 감소하였다. 인위적인 배수는 지역에서 와동(vortex) 형성으로 입자 정체를 유발하였고, 연행작용(entrainment)을 발생시켜 체류시간의 변화에 영향을 주었다. 즉, 배수 시 발생하는 제트류(jet flow)와 와동, 연행작용으로 인한 변화는 외해와 내만의 수평적 혼합 증가를 보여준다. 핵심용어: 조력발전소, 체류시간, 제트류, 연행작용

한국 남해안의 중심에 위치한 가막만의 퇴적 환경을 파악하기 위해 수치실험을 실시하였다. 가막만에서는 추계와 춘계에 퇴적량이 증가하는 반면, 하계와 동계에는 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 계절적 변화는 표층퇴적물 강열감량의 계절 변화와 정성적으로 일치하였다. 한편, 현장조사 결과에서 북동쪽과 남쪽에 두 개의 만구에서는 잔차류가 만내로 향하고 있고, 또한 만내에서는 대부분의 해역에서 퇴적이 침식에 비해 상대적으로 우세한 따라서, 가막만으로 유입된 오염물질들은 준설 등 특별한 이벤트가 없는 한 대부분 만내에 침강되어 퇴적할 판단되었다.

가막만 두 개의 만구에서의 수온·염분변화 및 해수교환특성을 이해하기 위하여, 하계 동계에 수온·염분 흐름을 15일간 동시 관측하였다. 현장조사결과, 흐름은 바람과 비교적 밀접한 상관관계를 가지고 있었고, 또한, 상관분석결과 수온은 조석보다는 기온의 영향을 더 크게 받고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 특히, 남쪽만구의 얕은 수심으로 인하여, 동쪽만구보다 계절에 따라 민감한 반응을 보였다. 염분의 농도변화에 기초한 해수교환율은 하계에 동쪽만구에서 0.5~29.9%(평균 11.6%), 남쪽만구에서 1.3~62.6%(평균 18.6%)로 각각 반면, 동계의 0.3~28.5%(평균 8.9%), 0.1~97.9%(평균 31.2%)로 따라서, 가막만의 남쪽만구가 동쪽만구에 비해 약 3배정도 높았고, 하계에는 동쪽만구, 그리고 동계에는 남쪽 만구의 해수교환율이 타 증가하는 이 결과는 따른 풍향변화가 해수교환율에 미치고 있음을 반증하였다.
