Lightening the load Permanent magnets are generally produced from solid metals or alloys. Less dense compositions involving lighter elements tend to demagnetize well below room temperature under modest applied external fields. Perlepe et al. now report that chemical reduction of a low-density chromium-pyrazine network produces magnet remains stable above 200°C and resists demagnetization with 7500-oersted coercivity at temperature. The straightforward synthetic route material shows promise...
The isolation of formally two-coordinate lanthanide (Ln) complexes is synthetically challenging, due to predominantly ionic Ln bonding regimes favoring high coordination numbers. In 2015, it was predicted that a near-linear dysprosium bis(amide) cation [Dy{N(Si
Molecules exhibiting bistability have been proposed as elementary binary units (bits) for information storage, potentially enabling fast and efficient computing. In particular, transition metal complexes can display magnetic via either spin-crossover or single-molecule magnet behavior. A supramolecular species composed of a pair nonequivalent Dy(III)–radical complexes exhibits single-molecule magnet (SMM) properties. The weak effective antiferromagnetic coupling between the Dy(III) ions can be compensated by application small (700 Oe) dc field, revealing relaxation mode two distinct SMMs. These unique results illustrate how dynamics [Dy-Radical]2 SMM fine-tuned exchange-bias and an applied magnetic field.
Abstract The dehydrating cyclotrimerization of 1‐tetralone in the presence titanium tetrachloride at high temperatures leads to homotruxene, a nonplanar arene which twist angles between its three outer benzene rings and central are stabilized by ethylene bridges. This non‐planar configuration allows for pronounced spin–orbit coupling triplet energy, leading room‐temperature phosphorescence air with lifetime 0.38 s quantum yield 5.6 %, clearly visible human eye after switching off excitation....
Abstract Single-ion anisotropy is vital for the observation of Single-Molecule Magnet (SMM) properties (i.e., a slow dynamics magnetization) in lanthanide-based systems. An iron(II) pyridyl-benzohydrazonate-based complex decorated with long alkyl chains is reported as a rare spin-crossover compound displaying wide thermal hysteresis spanning room temperature. On heating, this exhibits spin transition between LS ground state and an ordered HS-LS phase symmetry breaking from monoclinic P21/n into orthorhombic P21212 space groups. During cooling, the first transits magnetically distinguishable P21 before returning phase. Interconversion two distinct phases...
