近年，コンパクトなまちづくりが注目されており，都市のコンパクト化の評価に際しては，地区特性とインフラ維持更新コストとの関係を定量的に示すことが重要である．本研究では，全国の3次メッシュを地区特性の違いにより分類し，道路インフラを対象に，地区特性とインフラ維持更新コストとの関係を分析した．その結果，人口あたり道路インフラ維持更新コストは地区特性の違いにより最大16.7倍の差があることを明らかにした．さらに，自然増減のみを考慮した場合と人口がコンパクトに集積した場合の，地区特性による分類ごとの人口割合を用いて将来の道路インフラ維持更新コストを推計した結果，人口がコンパクトに集積すれば，道路インフラ維持更新コストを削減できるものの，その削減率は0.2%であることを明らかにした．

草加工場で最初に導入したDCSは稼働後20年を経過し，メーカーより部品供給や保守期限の問題も提起され，延命対策と平行しシステム更新の検討に入った。当初は，予算，工事期間の関係から同一メーカーによる段階的な部分更新を検討していたが，他メーカーより制御ステーションのキュービクルはそのまま残し，内部を入れ替えるマイグレーション方式による更新を提案され検討を行った。その結果，外部配線を取り外すことなくシステム全体の更新が可能になることや，工事が短縮できることで比較的短時間で切換が出来ると判断し実施に踏み切った。他社によるマイグレーションということで不安もあったが，入念な現場調査と打合せを重ねた結果，予定期間内で切替え工事が終了し，ループチェックを経て順調に操業に入ることができた。本稿ではマイグレーションの具体的な更新事例について報告する。
