Although long‐standing theory suggests that biotic variables are only relevant at local scales for explaining the patterns of species' distributions, recent studies have demonstrated improvements to species distribution models (SDMs) by incorporating predictor informed interactions. However, some key methodological questions remain, such as which kinds interactions permitted include in these models, how incorporate effects multiple interacting species, and account may a temporal dependence....
Abstract: This study tested whether the reduction in number of large-bodied seed dispersers is correlated with shifts taxonomic and functional (e.g. dispersal mode size) traits seeding communities within small fragments semi-deciduous forest, southern Mexico. In five (2.3–640 ha) one continuous forest site we sampled tree seedling species 40 (20 × 20 m) 120 (3 3 plots respectively, recorded incidence (presence/absence) disperser fauna (three common large-birds >500-g mammals). Tree were...
Abstract Mycoheterotrophy is an alternative nutritional strategy whereby plants obtain sugars and other nutrients from soil fungi. associated loss of photosynthesis have evolved repeatedly in plants, particularly monocots. Although reductive evolution plastomes mycoheterotrophs well documented, the dynamics nuclear genome remains largely unknown. Transcriptome datasets were generated four three families (Orchidaceae, Burmanniaceae, Triuridaceae) related green used for phylogenomic analyses...
In the last two decades, approximately 80 new Magnolia species have been described from Neotropics; thus this region now hosts almost half of world’s known diversity. Many these likely are not segregate taxa but rather separate populations or groups previously broadly circumscribed, widespread species. Such is possibly case dealbata complex (belonging to sect. Macrophylla), distributed throughout Sierra Madre Oriental mountain range in Eastern Mexico. This has divided into six morphospecies...
Abstract Background The Neotropics are considered one of the most biodiverse areas in world, housing at least third all vascular plant species. One genera that has diversified is Magnolia , with about 174 species three sections ( Macrophylla and Talauma ) endemic to Americas. In this work, we study biogeographic history Neotropical using high-throughput sequencing data. Sequences from 39 (38 sister genus Liriodendron were assembled. dataset contained sequences 239 nuclear targets complete...
A dataset about three topics is provided, as a follow-up to the article "Mexico's forest diversity: common tree species and proposed forest-vegetation provinces" by Ricker et al. (2022) [1]. Firstly, 6927 site locations are provided for 22,532 trees of 1452 species. Secondly, measurements basic wood-densities reported 779 species, obtained from 5256 trunk-core samples Mexico's national inventory, ranging 0.05 0.93 g/cm3. Third, data maps provinces [1] were updated with new cartography...
The pantropical genus Dalbergia includes more than 250 species. Phylogenetic studies of the group are scarce and have only included two or three species distributed in Mexico. We obtained herbarium samples Mexican, Central American, South American (sourced from MEXU). In addition, sequences GenBank accessions were used to complement study. Using internal transcribed spacer ( ITS ), matK rbcL 384 comprising America, Asia, Africa sampled evaluate phylogenetic relationships Mexican infrageneric...
The Mexican state of Veracruz has suffered very high deforestation rates in the last few decades, and despite establishment protected areas conservation projects, primary forest is now mainly persisting mostly small, scattered, fragmented remnants. New species Magnolia section Talauma this have been described with little to no reference already existing ones, potentially resulting over-splitting, obscuring their taxonomic delineation status, consequently programs. To study units genetic...
Abstract Aim New protected areas should consider safeguarding high conservation value sites based on multiple criteria and not just the presence of a single endangered or charismatic species. However, extent to which complementary coincide is usually unknown. We use case Guaiacum sanctum (Zygopyllaceae), an timber tree species, explore whether protection forests where this species most abundant would meet other goals, such as capturing regional plant biodiversity, protecting...
Trees or tree-like plants are defined here broadly as perennial, self-supporting with a total height of at least 5 m, without considering ascending leaves inflorescences, and 1 several erect stems diameter 10 cm. In this third contribution the taxonomic compilation Mexico’s native tree species, 271 species presented: 27 in family Apocynaceae (26% endemic), 63 Cactaceae (79%), 17 Ebenaceae (35%), 123 Fagaceae (60%), 41 Sapotaceae (22%). Several cactus genera endemic to Mexico, notably...
Mexico is floristically the fourth most species-rich country in world, and Asteraceae diverse vascular plant family this country. The species exhibits a wide range of growth forms, but tree-like habit, appropriately named daisy trees, heavily underestimated, even though slightly different tree definitions are handled. Very little known about their precise number or conservation status Mexico, so we update here list Mexican species, summarize very uses, present general panorama future...
Societal Impact Statement Mexico's extraordinary tree diversity is threatened by the increasing demand for resources because of tenfold population growth in last century. The conservation status trees and both urban rural livelihoods are also negatively affected agriculture, mining tourism. Nearly 60% Mexican endemic near species whose we have assessed Red List International Union Conservation Nature threatened, almost double percentage worldwide. If no measures taken to protect this...
Abstract A new species, Lepidonia alba (Asteraceae, Vernonieae), of the state Chiapas, Mexico is described. The species distinguished from salvinae, which also distributed in this region, by presence white flowers, diversity trichomes on phyllaries, glands at base cypsela and microsculpture pattern outer surface cypsela.
Four new species of the genus Bouvardia have been collected in last years southernmost states, Oaxaca and Chiapas Mexico. Three them short little white flowers with hariy corolla lobes adaxial face. They belong to section Bouvardiastrum closely related recently described B. macdougallii Lorence viticella Lorea-Hernández et Lozada-Pérez. The fourth one is a member Bouvardioides big coriaceous, white-tomentose leaves, langlassei.
Based on our detailed observations in the field, completed with herbarium material of representatives Hydrangea section Cornidia southeastern Mexico and Central America, we found that steyermarkii Standley, contrast to what has been assumed up now, is restricted Tacaná Volcano border Guatemala. The majority specimens reddish or whitish indument their branches South East belonging this nearly exclusively Neotropical clade, had identified as such, but characters these collections do not...
Three new species belonging to the Bouvardia genus are recognised and described by authors of paper. B. lancifolia Borhidi et Salas-Morales Oaxaca from relationship rosea Schltdl. Central Mexico, sinaloae E. Martínez Salas Sinaloa, related sancaroli M. Martínez-Díaz Tamaulipas tenuis rzedowskii Terrell S. D. Koch Guerrero proved be for science. Detailed studies floral characters led confirm correct circumscription bouvardioides (Seem.) Standl. its separation pallida Standl., a definitely...
Two new Randia species are described from the aculeata-complex, characterised by small leaves, flowers and fruits, later with soft exocarpium. This group apparently has its diversification centre in Mexico represented actually 19 3 varieties. crucis is a deciduous tree up to 6mhigh Oaxaca, terminal pairs of spines many-flowered lateral inflorescences very naked white tomentose hypanthium. manglaris special shrub Veracruz, living mangrove bush, completely glabrous, spines, few-flowered...
Three new species belonging to the genus of Randia are recognised and described by authors paper. The R. colimensis is an endemic Volcano Colima surroundings, vicarious xalapensis Mart. et Gal. largely distributed in Sierra Madre Oriental from Tamaulipas San Luis Potosí Tabasco Chiapas. dionisi similis strict endemics Oaxaca, related laevigatoides Borhidi loniceroides Dwyer Lorence, respectively.
Abstract— The new species Oxylobus coyulensis , currently only known from the Tehuacan-Cuicatlan Valley Biosphere Reserve, located in states of Oaxaca and Puebla, Mexico, is described. taxon can be distinguished other genus by leaf shape, trichome diversity, cypselae surface characteristics. In addition, following a detailed micromorphological study within this genus, it was found that O. juarezensis subglabrus present same similar characteristics, macromorphological characters, namely shape...
Hydrangea section Cornidia, currently consisting of 19 accepted taxa, occurs from Mexico to Chile and Argentina, with one species in southeast Asia. Its representatives are root-climbing lianas which may grow up 60 m high the tree canopy temperate (sub)tropical forests. Our extensive field work throughout its distribution area, study herbarium specimens ongoing molecular studies have resulted discovery new science, as well insights into circumscription many taxa. We here present amended...
Two new species of the genus Didymaea from Oaxaca and a Mitracarpus Campeche — both belonging to tribe Spermacoceae has been detected are described by authors. D. ixtepejiensis is dense, creeping herb high-montane pine woodland, with 1-nerved leaves. The next related microphylla L. O. Wms. stipules divided middle rotate corolla 3-nerved lobes almost base. differs it having base campanulate only middle, without conspicuous nerves. other species, naniflora leaves floribunda Rzed., which...
A new species of the genus Deppea was collected in zone Chimalapas (Oaxaca), area especially rich rare and endemic species. It is named as D. chimalaparum belongs to section group small-flowered with unequal calyx lobes. Within this it differs from obtusiflora (Benth.) Benth. by having deciduous stipules non-domatiate leaves, inaequalis Standl. et Steyerm. pubescens Hemsl. its naked leaves short, few-flowered axillary inflorescences.
