Abstract Protected area downgrading, downsizing and degazettement (PADDD) is a global phenomenon that has not received formal attention in Reducing Emissions from Deforestation Forest Degradation (REDD+) policies designed to reduce forest carbon emissions conserve biodiversity. Here, we examine how PADDD affects deforestation emissions. We documented 174 enacted 8 proposed events affecting more than 48,000 km 2 three REDD+ priority countries: Democratic Republic of the Congo, Malaysia, Peru....

Misconceptions, lack of knowledge, and negative attitudes towards sharks act as barriers preventing actions required to tackle threats shark populations, limiting the success global conservation initiatives. Peru, a major player for international trade products, recently approved 'National Action Plan Conservation Management Sharks, Rays Chimaeras' (PAN-Tib); guiding document initiatives aimed at these fishes. Within PAN-Tib, assessment Peruvians' current knowledge is listed research...

To implement the REDD+ mechanism (Reducing Emissions for Deforestation and Forest Degradation, countries need to prioritize areas combat future deforestation CO2 emissions, identify drivers of around which develop mitigation actions, quantify value carbon financial mechanisms. Each comes with its own methodological challenges, existing approaches tools do so can be costly or require considerable technical knowledge skill. Here, we present an approach utilizing a machine learning technique...

Species-level identification of commercially landed fish provides pivotal information for stock assessment and fishery management. However, there is a common lack species determination in landing records from small-scale fisheries (SSFs) worldwide. Using DNA barcoding analyses, we detected four overlooked bony (yellow snapper, union snook, blackspot wrasse, steeplined drum) one shark (the sicklefin smooth-hound) official SSFs northern Peru. Of particular concern the smooth-hound Mustelus...
