The gas-phase reaction between MoO3-x and H(2)S in a reducing atmosphere at elevated temperatures (800 degrees to 950 C) has been used synthesize large quantities of an almost pure nested inorganic fullerene (IF) phase MoS(2). We report the observation of single nanotube fragmentation, under tensile stresses, using nanotube-containing thin polymeric films. Similar fragmentation tests with fibers instead nanotubes are routinely performed to study fiber-matrix stress transfer ability in fiber composite materials, and thus efficiency quality interfaces. The multiwall nanotube-matrix is estimated be at least one order magnitude larger than conventional fiber-based composites.

Raman and resonance spectra of ${\mathrm{MoS}}_{2}$ nanoparticles, in the form inorganic fullerenelike nanoparticles with diameters ranging from 200 to 2000 \AA{} size, platelets 50 5000 are presented. Off resonance, first-order bands broadened, but not significantly shifted, no additional observed, indicating that atomic structure is preserved, at least locally, nanoparticles. The broadening effect assigned phonon confinement by facet boundaries. In several peaks observed. electron-phonon...

The phenomenon of a partial 2H→1T phase transition within multiwalled WS2 nanotubes under substitutional rhenium doping is discovered by means high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Using density-functional tight-binding calculations for the related MoS2 compound, we consider possible origin this transition, which was known formerly only and intercalated alkali metals. An interplay between stability layered or nanotubular forms 2H 1T allotropes found to be intimately with their...

Nanoparticles of WS2 and MoS2 with a closed cage structure (fullerene-like) that are termed IF phases synthesized in large amounts pure form. These nanoparticles were shown to play favorable role as solid lubricants under severe conditions where fluids unable support the heavy load squeezed away from contact area. Various tribological scenarios presented for these superior lubricants, demonstrating scale potential applications materials. The mechanism action is briefly discussed. other...

Abstract Chirality of materials are known to affect optical, magnetic and electric properties, causing a variety nontrivial phenomena such as circular dichiroism for chiral molecules, Skyrmions in magnets nonreciprocal carrier transport conductors. On the other hand, effect chirality on superconducting has not been known. Here we report nonreciprocity superconductivity—unambiguous evidence superconductivity reflecting structure which forward backward supercurrent flows equivalent because...

Recently, milligram quantities of MoS2 fullerene-like nanotubes and negative curvature polyhedra (generically called inorganic material, IF), were reproducibly obtained by a gas phase reaction from an oxide precursor (Feldman, Y.; Wasserman, E.; Srolovitz, D. J.; Tenne, R. Science 1995, 267, 222. Safran, S. A.; Homyonfer, M.; Phys. Rev. Lett. 74, 1778). The present work focuses on the mechanism synthesis IF-MS2 (M = W, Mo). IF material is particles smaller than ca. 0.2 μm, while larger...

Abstract In analogy to graphite, nanoparticles of inorganic compounds with lamellar two‐dimensional structure, such as MoS 2 , are not stable against folding, and can adopt nanotubular fullerene‐like structures, nicknamed fullerenes or IF. Various applications for nanomaterials were proposed. For instance, IF‐WS shown have beneficial effects solid lubricants part tribological surfaces. Using the paradigm of carbon fullerenes, it is shown that nanoparticles inorganic compounds with a layered structure, like MoS2, are unstable against bending and form hollow closed clusters, designated fullerene-like structures (IF). The analogy can be extended to similar nanostructures, nanotubes (NT), nested fullerenes negative curvature (Schwartzites), etc. Various synthetic routes described obtain isolated phases IF. Pentagons heptagons expected play primordial role in folding these...
