Decomposition of 14 C-labeled lignin to CO 2 by the lignin-decomposing fungi Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Coriolus versicolor required a growth substrate such as cellulose or glucose. Growth with sole carbon addition an otherwise complete medium was negligible.

A definitive assay for microbiological and biochemical research on the biodegradation of lignin was developed using radioactive synthetic lignins specifically labeled in side chains, aromatic rings or methoxyl groups. The [14C]lignins were prepared by oxidative polymerization with peroxidase H2O2 Of coniferyl alcohol (4-hydroxy-3-methyoxycinnamyl alcohol). polymers shown spectroscopic chemical methods to contain same intermonomer linkages found natural lignins. Abstract Background Rifampin-resistant tuberculosis is a leading cause of morbidity worldwide; only one-third persons start treatment, and outcomes are often inadequate. Several trials demonstrate 90% efficacy using an all-oral, 6-month regimen bedaquiline, pretomanid, linezolid (BPaL), but significant toxicity occurred 1200-mg linezolid. After US Food Drug Administration approval in 2019, some clinicians rapidly implemented BPaL initial 600-mg dose adjusted by serum drug concentrations...

Lignin biodegradation in a variety of natural materials was examined using specifically labeled synthetic 14 C-lignins. Natural included soils, sediments, silage, steer bedding, and rumen contents. Both aerobic anaerobic incubations were used. No C-labeled lignin to gaseous products under conditions observed. Aerobic mineralization varied with respect type material used, site, soil horizon, temperature. The greatest observed degradation occurred from Yellowstone National Park amounted over...

Abstract Background Tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant global health threat. Upon diagnosis, patients with pulmonary TB are required to undergo specific isolation precautions prevent further disease transmission. Current practice typically mandates for at least two weeks post-diagnosis, extended periods those found have positive sputum acid fast bacilli (AFB) smear results. The most recent Canadian Standards (2022) and other international groups suggested that the decision discontinue...

These trials were dominated by isolated pulmonary TB; thus, data BPaLM effectiveness extrapulmonary (EPTB) remains limited. Methods: We describe safe effective use of a patient treatment MDR-TB involving an site. Results:...

Background: Rifampin-resistant (RR) and multidrug-resistant (MDR) tuberculosis (TB) previously required treatment with a protracted course of toxic second-line TB drugs suboptimal efficacy. Novel 6-month regimens bedaquiline, pretomanid, linezolid ± moxifloxacin (BPaL/M) are now recommended, but implementation in Canada is not well described. Methods: We analyzed eight people MDR or pre–extensively drug-resistant (pre-XDR) rifamycin intolerance treated BPaL/M Western to inform expanded use....
