Abstract Pollen data from 18,000 14 C yr bp were compiled in order to reconstruct biome distributions at the last glacial maximum southern Europe and Africa. Biome reconstructions made using objective biomization method applied pollen counts a complete list of dryland taxa wherever possible. Consistent major differences present‐day biomes are shown. Forest xerophytic woods/scrub replaced by steppe, both Mediterranean region Africa, except south‐western Cape Province where fynbos (xerophytic...
Abstract The Banyoles lacustrine sequence shows that the vegetational history of northeastern Iberian Peninsula during last 30,000 yr follows North Atlantic pattern climatic oscillations. pollen diagram, supported by two calibrated 14 C dates and nine U/Th dates, a clear interstadial event between 27,000 B.P., Pleniglacial period with minor oscillations ended abruptly ca. 14,420 ± 410 late-glacial records classical stages described in Northern Europe: Bølling-Allerød Interstade, Younger...
The aim of this research is to study the climate and vegetation history in western Mediterranean, Iberian Peninsula, during middle Holocene through pollen analysis. origin deposits varied from most xeric more mesic Mediterranean environments. timing, extent, progress establishment have a degree variability depending on biogeographical region. Analyses several sequences reveal climatic transformations flora between 7000 4000 cal. yr BP. Pollen concentrations been used some evaluate order...
Three sedimentary sequences from the southeastern littoral of Iberian Peninsula have been palynologically studied. The results obtained show that during Holocene no significant forest cover existed in studied area, so different phases identified mainly an alternation shrub formations and steppe communities probably determined by limitations are fundamentally bioclimatic. Highest values arboreal pollen at bottom San Rafael sequence would correspond to older period, when area appears be...
Four pollen diagrams from Minorca (Balearic Islands) have been correlated with other previously studied sequences Majorca and to define a Holocene landscape sequence for the region 8000 yr B.P. present. The lower part of reflects climatic phase more rain less-marked seasonality than today. Significant quantities Corylus, Buxus, mesophilous taxa are found. In middle part, between 5000 4000 B.P., strong change is recorded in composition structure vegetational landscape, vegetation appearing...
Abstract. Quaternary records provide an opportunity to examine the nature of vegetation and fire responses rapid past climate changes comparable in velocity magnitude those expected 21st-century. The best documented examples change are warming events associated with Dansgaard–Oeschger (D–O) cycles during last glacial period, which were sufficiently large have had a potential feedback through albedo greenhouse gas emissions on climate. Previous reconstructions D–O used independently...
Superimposed on the long-term climate variability attributed to orbital forcing, there are other modes of covering timescales from interannual millennial throughout Holocene. Their signatures in proxy archives can differ substantially because their lower magnitude and regional diversity. However, if identified they yield better understanding physical mechanisms regionally linking causes effects. Here we describe a high-resolution record organic matter accumulation sediments Burg lake...
Abstract Fire has been one of the main causes disturbance vegetation over time, and since Neolithic become an irreplaceable tool for opening forest spaces maintenance pastures. Previous studies showed that intensity effects wildfires are related to biomass controlled by climate factors. However, in regions such as Cantabria, where agriculture livestock have spread throughout territory prehistory, fires should also be closely human land uses. The aim this paper was investigate history...
