Abstract. Extreme ocean waves in the Caribbean Sea are commonly related to effects of storms and hurricanes during months June through November. The collapse 200 m Puerto Colombia pier March 2009 revealed meteorological phenomena other than that may be influencing extreme wave regime Colombian Caribbean. marked seasonality these atmospheric fronts was established by analyzing meteorological–marine reports Instituto de Hidrología, Meteorología y Estudios Ambientales (IDEAM, based on its...
Restrepo, J.C.; Schrottke, K.; Traini, C.; Ortiz, Orejarena, A.; Otero, L.; Higgins, A., and Marriaga, L., 2016. Sediment transport geomorphological change in a high-discharge tropical delta (Magdalena River, Colombia): Insights from period of intense human intervention (1990–2010). There is strong indication that environmental changes interventions have affected freshwater discharge sediment flux the Magdalena River (northwestern South America) within 1990 to 2010. Thus, stream flow,...
Abstract. The aim of this study is to determine the contribution and importance cold fronts storms extreme waves in different areas Colombian Caribbean an attempt extent threat posed by flood processes which these coastal populations are exposed. Furthermore, wishes establish actions engineering constructions should be subject. In calculation maritime constructions, most important parameter height wave. For reason, it necessary design wave a structure resistant. This varies according return...
The rapid urbanization processes across the world can be considered one of most influential factors in climate change, particularly metropolitan areas. In South America, growing population and recurrent non-sustainable or controlled urban land management plans are even increasing negative consequences heat islands. As a representative case study, Soledad northern Colombia is an area with strong wind events, which have caused significant damage to property human lives, conditioning plans....
AbstractA simulation of wind-wave activity in the North Atlantic Basin, between June to August 2002, has been performed using SWAN model. The results simulations were compared with data obtained from National Data Buoy Center and NOAA's WAVEWATCH III (WW3) wave This study tested applicability model at oceanic scales. was developed for coastal areas, but version (40.11), spherical coordinates have included code applications. It found that, general, WW3 produces a somewhat better fit...
ABSTRACT Infective endocarditis (IE) is a life-threatening infection of the heart endothelium and valves. Staphylococcus aureus predominant cause severe IE frequently associated with infections in health care settings device-related infections. Multilocus sequence typing (MLST), spa typing, virulence gene microarrays are used to classify S. clinical isolates. This study examined utility these tools investigate epidemiology IE. Ninety-seven isolates were collected from patients diagnosed (i)...
Ortiz, J.C.; Salcedo, B., and Otero, L.J., 2014. Investigating the collapse of Puerto Colombia pier (Colombian Caribbean Coast) in March 2009: methodology for reconstruction extreme events evaluation their impact on coastal infrastructure. On 7, 2009, a 200-m section collapsed when cold front passed through Atlántico Department coast. Herein, most important meteo-marine event last 10 years Colombian area was reconstructed using SWAN software WAVEWATCH III global wave model, which uses wind...

Evaluation of extreme waves associated with cyclonic activity on San Andrés Island in the Caribbean Sea since 1900.San is one most important tourist destinations Sea. The storms hurricanes 1900 were studied. A total 17 events was identified last 100 years. During seven these events, eye storm located less than 150 km from coast: Hattie (1961), Alma (1970), Irene (1971), Joan (1988), Cesar (1996), Katrina (1999), and, recent, Beta...
Conde-Frias, M.; Otero, L.; Restrepo, J.C.; Ortiz, Ruiz, J., and Osorio, A.F., 2017. Swash oscillations in a microtidal dissipative beach. This paper evaluates the relationship between gravity infragravity energy with swash as well model's ability to reproduce transformation of wave it approaches shore on beach. For this purpose, numerical experiments were conducted beach from Cartagena, Colombia. Mean free surface measurements carried out for 2 days February 2014 by installing cross-shore...
Microlophus is a lizard genus of South-America which has many species with sexual size dimorphism. An ecological study was performed on M. atacamensis, inhabiting the intertidal zone coast northern Chile. The following questions were addressed: (1) does atacamensis exhibit dimorphism?(2) do individuals different age and sex segregate spatially?(3) use type microhabitat?and (4) sexes differences in thermoregulatory characteristics? The conducted localities from Chile, include two types rocky...
Monthly freshwater discharge data of ten rivers draining into the Caribbean Sea in northern Colombia (Caribbean alluvial plain) are analyzed. The used to quantify magnitude, estimate long-term trends, and evaluate variability patterns discharges ocean. These Colombian contribute with ~340.9 km3 yr-1 Sea. Magdalena River delivers largest discharge, a mean at Calamar 205.5 which represents 26% total fluvial this basin. From 2000 2010 annual streamflow these rose up three fold. However, only...
