#### What you need to know #### Author’s story By the time KS entered college, her world revolved around gym. No sooner would she finish a lecture than dash campus fitness centre. She feel anxious if missed workout and go no matter how tired or busy was. Travelling was very difficult because of obsessiveness about exercise routines. lost many friendships career opportunities barely available outside schedule. Sub-1 AMU mass determination is important for determining fission yields and neutron multiplicity, which are necessary inputs models. Fission models can improve spent nuclear waste stream analysis fuel burnup determination. To achieve this goal, we have used superconducting microcalorimeter detectors to directly measure the energy of fragments from spontaneous 252 Cf. Under hydrostatic pressure, the ground state of a two-dimensional electron gas at $\nu=5/2$ changes from fractional quantum Hall to stripe phase. By measuring energy gap and onset temperature phase we mapped out diagram these competing phases in pressure-temperature plane. Our data highlight dichotomy two descriptions half-filled Landau level near critical point: one based on electrons another composite fermions.
Due to its extremely rich phase diagram, the two-dimensional electron gas exposed perpendicular magnetic fields has been subject of intense and sustained study. One particularly interesting problem in this system is that half-filled Landau level, where Fermi sea composite fermions, a fractional quantum Hall state arising from pairing instability nematic were observed N = 0, 1, ≥ 2 levels, respectively. Thus, different ground states developed levels. This situation recently changed, when...

ABSTRACT Proper spatiotemporal distribution of the phytohormone auxin throughout plant tissues mediates a variety developmental processes. Auxin levels are tightly regulated via de novo synthesis, transport, and conversion from its conjugated forms precursors. These can be through precursor, indole 3-butyric acid (IBA), into active auxin, indole-3-acetic (IAA), in peroxisomal β-oxidation process. Defects IBA-to-IAA cause multiple defects Arabidopsis, demonstrating IBA-derived IAA is...
Abstract Superconducting transition-edge sensors (TESs) used in X-ray and $$\gamma$$ γ -ray microcalorimeters suffer degraded performance if cooled a magnetic field B sufficient to trap flux the sensors. We report measurements of TESs before after implementing measures reduce stray fields from sources inside outside cryostat. Decay energy spectrometry (DES) is a novel radiometric technique for high-precision analysis of nuclear materials. DES employs the unique thermal detection physics cryogenic microcalorimeters with ultra-high resolution and 100$\%$ efficiency to accomplish high precision decay measurements. Low-activity samples 1 Bq or less, without chemical separation, are used provide elemental isotopic compositions in single measurement. Isotopic ratio precisions ppm - 1,000 (isotope dependent), which...
The pseudogap state of high-$T_{\rm c}$ cuprates, known for its partial gapping the Fermi surface above superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$, is believed to hold key understanding origin Planckian relaxation and quantum criticality. However, nature in has remained a fundamental open question. Here, we report observation Yamaji effect single layer cuprate HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+\delta}$. This direct evidence closed pockets normal phase. small size determined from (occupying...
The Hyperspectral X-ray Imaging (HXI) project will enable non-destructive chemical-state determination of nano-scale samples in the electron microscope for nuclear safeguards applications. To efficiently measure chemical state through electron-excited emission requires a combination wide spectral bandwidth, high resolution, and count rate capability. We are building next-generation detector based on an array transition edge sensors (TESs) to make these measurements possible routine scanning...
