In the frame of European Commission project "Seismic Hazard Harmonization in Europe" (SHARE), aiming at harmonizing seismic hazard a scale, compilation homogeneous, parametric earthquake catalogue was planned. The goal to be achieved by considering most updated historical dataset and assessing homogenous magnitudes, with support from several institutions. This paper describes SHARE Earthquake Catalogue (SHEEC), which covers time window 1000–1899. It strongly relies on experience "Network...
We present the results of a dense seismological experiment in western part Gulf Corinth (Psathopyrgos-Aigion area), one most active rifts Aegean region for which we have precise tectonic information. The network included 51 digital stations that operated during July and August 1991, covering surface 40 times km2. Among 5000 recorded events with ML ranging between 1.0 3.0, precisely located 774 events. obtained 148 well-constrained focal mechanisms using P-wave first motions. Of these, 60...
Tectonic and seismological data collected in the field following September 13, 1986, Kalamata earthquake (south Peloponnesus) are presented analyzed to discuss rupture process regional tectonics. The event occurred on normal fault whose trace was mapped with SPOT images topographic observations. This is part of an approximately NNW‐SSE en échelon system cutting through Hellenic nappes. striking N15°E average, a dip about 50°, has minimum cumulated Quaternary throw order 1 km. measured...
Abstract. A homogeneous earthquake catalogue for Greece and adjacent areas covering the period 1900–2009 is presented, to be used reliable seismic hazard studies. The catalogues of Makropoulos Burton (1981) et al. (1989), time span 1900–1985, were updated 1986–2009 using instrumentally determined focal coordinates, except magnitude from bulletin ISC. For Ms, which scale included in previous versions, same procedure applied since 1964 was adopted, ISC body wave (mb) a regression equation. In...
During the summer of 1993, a network seismological stations was installed over period 7 weeks around eastern Gulf Corinth where sequence strong earthquakes occurred during 1981. Seismicity lies between Alepohori fault dipping north and Kaparelli south is related to both these antithetic faults. Focal mechanisms show normal faulting with active plane at about 45° for The aftershocks 1981 earthquake recorded by King et al. (1985) were processed again similar results. In contrast, observations...
More than 1000 earthquakes recorded during 7 weeks in 1986 the Peloponnese and surrounding areas show shallow seismicity spread over a wide area bounded by Hellenic trench. The highest level energy release is for clusters located along trench, where changes morphology are seen. A few also observed, as at intersection between Gulf of Corinth Patras, near Lake Trikhonis, or Kythira Crete. In Peloponnese, do not define single faults, but diffusely distributed. higher concentration deepening...
During a 7‐week microearthquake experiment conducted in Epirus, Akarnania, and the Ionian islands of western Greece, we located approximately 600 earthquakes with magnitudes between 2 4.2. No event was deeper than 40 km. The seismicity cannot be clearly associated any single fault except Lixourion right‐lateral west islands. Focal mechanisms about 100 show, for narrow band along coast, ENE–WSW shortening consistent surface tectonics. Farther east, focal show NNW–SSE extension beneath...
An earthquake catalogue for Greece is presented covering the period 1900–1985. It based on a similar effort attempted few years ago. The present version contains more than double number of events, i.e. 4310 events compared with 1806 in previous papers. also includes another 1711 which took place region an Appendix. accuracy and completeness parameters these shocks were insufficient inclusion main without affecting catalogue's homogeneity. For new entries magnitudes are redetermined using...
The Corinth Rift in Central Greece has been studied extensively during the past decades, as it is one of most seismically active regions Europe. It characterized by normal faulting and extension rates between 6 15 mm yr−1 an approximately N10E° direction. On 2013 May 21, earthquake swarm was initiated with a series small events 4 km southeast Aigion city. In next days, seismic activity became more intense, outbursts several stronger magnitude 3.3 3.7. seismicity migrated towards east June,...
Seismicity (Ml <3.5) in the southern Aegean, located using data collected during seven weeks of recording by a temporary network seismological stations, largely follows Hellenic arc; Sea Crete is nearly aseismic, and only little activity south trench, within African plate. Focal mechanisms exhibit reverse faulting external part arc normal inside it. This indicates N-S extension northern Gulf Corinth, Cyclades Dodecanese Islands, but NW-SE Peloponnese western E-W eastern Crete. non-uniform...
Abstract The Kozani earthquake (Ms = 6.6) of 13 May 1995 is the strongest event decade in Greece and occurred a region low seismic activity. Using regional data strong-motion record at station, we relocate mainshock 40.183° N 21.660° E, beneath Vourinos massif depth 14.2 km. We also compute focal mechanism by body-waveform modeling teleseismic distance, which confirms normal mechanism. most likely plane strikes 240° ± 1° dips 40° with centroid 11 1 Modeling that nucleation started eastern...
Abstract The Galaxidi earthquake that occurred in the Gulf of Corinth on 18 November 1992 was not followed by a noticeable aftershock sequence, fact also observed for 1965 Eratini event same area. temporary network 35 stations we installed 5 days after mainshock did help to identify cluster activity related mainshock. In section across epicentral zone, focal mechanism and distribution few aftershocks define plane dipping north, consistent with nearby Helike fault. We propose an asperity...
