Relying on contact dynamics simulations, we study the statistical distribution of forces inside a confined packing circular rigid disks with solid friction. We find following: (1) The number normal and tangential lower than their respective mean value decays as power law. (2) higher exponentially. (3) ratio friction to force is uniformly distributed uncorrelated force. (4) When normalized respect values, these distributions are independent sample size particle distribution.

We study via simulation how a lattice breaks if each bond is an elastic beam having longitudinal and flexural breaking thresholds randomly selected according to various probability distributions. observe scaling of force, displacement, number broken beams in the controlled regime. The distribution local forces just before characterized by multifractal spectrum f(\ensuremath{\alpha}).

Reliability and accuracy of the determination self-affine exponents are studied quantified from analysis synthetic profiles surfaces. The exponent is measured using different methods either relying on a ``fractal dimension'' (i.e., box counting divider methods) or directly analyzing exponent. second group includes variable bandwidth, first return multireturn probability distribution, power spectrum. all these assessed in terms difference between an ``input'' used for construction ``output''...

Digital image correlation is a measurement technique that allows one to retrieve displacement fields 'separating' two digital images of the same sample at different stages loading. Because its remarkable sensitivity, it possible not only detect cracks with sub-pixel opening, which would be visible but also provide accurate estimates stress intensity factors. For this purpose suitable tools have been devised minimize sensitivity noise. Working experimentalist deal wide range scales from...

We recorded the height of a granitic fault surface as function position along one‐dimensional profiles. show that profiles exhibit an “anisotropic” scaling invariance: self‐affinity . The difference between maximum and minimum height, standard deviation over length L are proportional to ζ , where ≈ 0.84. Abstract The methodology of eXtended finite element method is applied to the measurement displacements through digital image correlation. An algorithm, initially based on a decomposition displacement fields, extended benefit from discontinuity and singular enrichments over suited subset elements. This allows one measure irregular encountered, say, in cracked solids, as demonstrated both artificial examples experimental case studies. Moreover, an optimization strategy for support enables...

We present the results of a systematic numerical investigation force distributions in granular packings. find that all main features transmission previously established for two-dimensional systems hard particles hold three-dimensional and soft particles, too. In particular, probability distribution normal forces falls off exponentially above mean force. For below mean, this is either decreasing power law when system far from static equilibrium, or nearly uniform at agreement with recent...

The width of the crack interface in fuse model after breakdown, w, scales with size network, L, as w\ensuremath{\sim}${\mathit{L}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\zeta}}}$. When disorder is narrow, or when it includes arbitrarily small threshold values, we find that \ensuremath{\zeta}=0.7 to within 10%, indicative this being a universal value. This not far from 2/3, suggested by an analogy random directed polymer problem. When, on other hand, strong and large exponent \ensuremath{\zeta} depends...

By construction, digital image correlation is an ill-posed problem. To circumvent this difficulty, regularization often performed implicitly through the kinematic basis chosen to express sought displacement fields. Conversely, a priori information on mechanical behavior of studied material available.
