Using optical microscopy, phase shifting interferometry and atomic force we demonstrate the existence of undulated structures in meniscus ferroelectric smectic-C* films. Photooptical properties of a new cholesteric mixture containing azobenzene-based chiral dopant were investigated. Recently Wang et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 027801 (2010)] discovered a novel smectic-${C}^{\ensuremath{\ast}}$ liquid-crystal commensurate structure with six-layer period. Challenged by this discovery, we show that the observed and unusual sequence of polar phases can be explained in framework discrete Landau model phase transitions two-component order parameter. We report measurements of the interaction between surfaces presmectic membrane above temperature transition to phase without layer ordering.
