This paper identifies the top-50 priority questions for meiofaunal research, highlighting their critical roles in biogeochemical cycles and biodiversity. It calls a balanced research agenda, international cooperation, advances technology to overcome current challenges unlock meiofauna's full potential.
The phylogeny of Kinorhyncha was analyzed using morphology and the molecular loci 18S rRNA 28S rRNA. different datasets were separately in combination, maximum likelihood Bayesian Inference. inference sequence data combination with supported division into two major clades: Cyclorhagida comb. nov. Allomalorhagida nom. latter clade represents a new kinorhynch class, accommodates Dracoderes, Franciscideres, yet undescribed genus which is closely related traditional homalorhagid genera....
Abstract Molecular techniques like metabarcoding, while promising for exploring diversity of communities, are often impeded by the lack reference DNA sequences available taxonomic annotation. Our study explores benefits combining targeted barcoding and morphological taxonomy to improve metabarcoding efficiency, using beach meiofauna as a case study. Beaches globally important ecosystems inhabited meiofauna, microscopic animals living in interstitial space between sand grains, which play key...
Kinorhyncha is a group of benthic, microscopic animals distributed worldwide in marine sediments. The phylum divided into two classes, Cyclorhagida and Allomalorhagida, congruent with the major clades recovered recent phylogenetic analyses. Allomalorhagida accommodates more than one-third described species, most them assigned to family Pycnophyidae. All previous analyses genera within Pycnophyidae, Pycnophyes Kinorhynchus, as paraphyletic polyphyletic. A problem these studies was lack...
Meiofauna sampling in the proximity of Syd-Hällsö Island (Strömstad, Sweden) revealed a new species Kinorhyncha from Skagerrak. The species, Setaphyes elenae sp. nov., is distinguished its congeners by arrangement middorsal cuticular specializations (it has shortened, distally rounded processes on segments 1 and 9 elevations throughout 2–8), as well presence paired laterodorsal setae 3, 5, 7 ventromedial 5 both males females. finding north-eastern Atlantic Ocean, provides valuable...
Data are presented from the first intensive sampling of Kinorhyncha around Iberian Peninsula over a 21-year periodfrom 1990 to 2011, 81 sites mostly in less than 100 m water depth. Light-microscopic examination approximately2000 specimens yielded 11 genera and 29 species, only which were previously recorded peninsular waters. Thebalance comprises ten new species records for peninsula eight that yet be described. The mostspeciose genus is Echinoderes, with two them new, followed by Pycnophyes...
Abstract The increasing demand for metals is pushing forward the progress of deep‐sea mining industry. abyss between Clarion and Clipperton Fracture Zones (CCFZ), a region holding higher concentration minerals than land deposits, most targeted area exploration polymetallic nodules worldwide, which may likely disturb seafloor across large areas over many years. Effects from nodule extraction cause acute biodiversity loss organisms inhabiting sediments nodules. Attention to ecosystems their...
Abstract The type species of Dracoderes, D. abei, is redescribed based on specimens from several localities in Japan and Korea, a new the genus, Dracoderes gallaicus sp. nov., described coast Spain Western Europe. distinguished by presence lateral accessory spines segment 5. In addition, preliminary diagnostic notes yet undescribed Okinawa Region, 1, are provided. Based information abei an emended genus diagnosis for proposed. study includes first scanning electron microscopical data...
Four new species of Pycnophyes are described from Korean waters and the East China Sea. pardosi n. sp. is distinguished other congeners by presence a single paradorsal seta on segments 2-8 pair segment 9, combined with longitudinal cuticular thickenings dorsal ventral sides 10. chalgap easily shape its midsternal plate rounded posterior margin, extending beyond overlapping half following segment. cristatus recognized lack ventromedial setae 3-6 pointed middorsal processes that turn...
The problem of reconciling earthworm taxonomy and phylogeny has shown advances with the application molecular techniques, yet they have proven insufficient. Integrative systematics could solve this by combining multiple sources evolutionary information. Relatively low diversity, restricted range nomenclatural conflict make Hormogastridae Michaelsen, 1900 a desirable target for an integrative approach. main systematic conflicts within family are polyphyly species Hormogaster pretiosa 1899,...
Abstract The ecosystem formed by the marine flowering plant Posidonia oceanica is a biodiversity reservoir and provides many services in coastal Mediterranean regions. Marine meiofauna also major component of that biodiversity, its study can be useful addressing both theoretical applied questions ecology, evolution, conservation. We review meiofaunal diversity meadow P. combining literature case study. First, we gathered records 672 species from 71 published studies, as well unpublished...
