Abstract The Faint Object Camera and Spectrograph (FOCAS) is a Cassegrain optical instrument for the Subaru Telescope. Its capabilities include $6^\prime \phi$ FOV direct imaging, low-resolution spectroscopy ($R=250 \hbox{--} 2000$ with ${0\rlap {.}{}^{\mathrm {\prime \prime }}4}$ slitwidth), multi-slit polarimetry. We describe overall design of FOCAS, its observing functions, performance verification procedures that have been carried out.

We present new optical images ($B$, $V$, and H$\alpha$) of the archetypical starburst/superwind galaxy M82 obtained with 8.2 m Subaru Telescope to reveal detailed structures superwind-driven nebula high-latitude dark lanes. The emission-line is decomposed into (1) a ridge-dominated component comprising numerous filament/loop sub-structures whose overall morphology appears as pair narrow cylinders, (2) diffuse extended over much wider opening angle from nucleus. suggest that these two...

Double wrapping: A new spiroborate-based double-stranded helicate was prepared from tetraphenol strands with a bipyridine unit in the middle and NaBH4. The X-ray single-crystallographic analysis revealed that adopts double helical structure, which two Na cations very short distance of 3.1 Å (see figure), were held center complex.
