In hepatocytes from fasted rats, several amino acids are known to stimulate glycogen synthesis via activation of synthase. The hypothesis that an increase in cell volume resulting acid uptake may be involved the stimulation is supported by following observations. 1) extent both metabolizable and nonmetabolizable was directly proportional their ability volume, except for proline, which stimulated more than could accounted volume. 2) Both swelling were prevented when incubated hyperosmotic...

We have recently shown that conditions known to activate AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) in primary beta-cells can trigger their apoptosis. The present study demonstrates this is also the case MIN6 beta-cell line, which was used investigate underlying mechanism. Sustained activation of AMPK induced by culture with adenosine analogue AICA-riboside or at low glucose concentrations. Both a sequential AMPK, c-Jun-N-terminal (JNK) and caspase-3. effects on JNK apoptosis were demonstrated...

Studies of Langendorff-perfused rat hearts have revealed a biphasic response the mitochondrial respiratory chain to global ischaemia. The initial effect is 30-40% increase in rate glutamate/malate oxidation after 10 min ischaemia, owing an capacity for NADH oxidation. This followed by progressive decrease these oxidative activities as ischaemia prolonged, apparently damage Complex I at site subsequent dehydrogenase component. exacerbated reperfusion, which causes further activity and also...

The mechanism linking the stimulation of liver glycogen synthesis to swelling induced either by amino acids or hypotonicity was studied in hepatocytes, gel-filtered extracts, and purified preparations particulate which glycogen-metabolizing enzymes are bound. High concentrations KCl, but not potassium glutamate, were found inhibit permeabilized hepatocytes. Similarly, physiological (30-50 mM) Cl- ions also synthase phosphatase vitro, whereas 10-20 mM ions, a concentration swollen did...

Salinity and drought are significant abiotic stresses affecting plant growth productivity. To convert arid saline coral sandy soil in the Vietnamese archipelago into arable land, this study isolated evaluated salinity tolerance exopolysaccharide (EPS) production of Bacillus velezensis TSD5 strain from Vietnam. EPSTSD5 was estimated to have a molecular weight 1.09 × 105Da based on its intrinsic viscosity, with monosaccharide components consisting glucose, rhamnose, mannose (of which is...

Swelling of hepatocytes increases the concentration inositol 1,4,5‐trisphosphate, Ca 2+ and cAMP, without activating glycogen phosphorylase. In these hepatocytes, activation phosphorylase by suboptimal concentrations vasopressin or angiotensin II was partly antagonized.
