Europe has a long history of human pressure on freshwater ecosystems. As continues to grow and new threats emerge, there is an urgent need for conservation biodiversity its ecosystem services. However, whilst some taxonomic groups, mainly vertebrates, have received disproportionate amount attention funds, other groups remain largely off the public scientific radar. Freshwater mussels (Bivalvia, Unionida) are alarming example this bias here we point out six conceptual areas that immediate...
Freshwater biodiversity is under threat, but long-term quantitative studies showing major demographic declines in invertebrate species are still scarce. Here we focus on a study (2004 to 2019) using four native freshwater mussel (Order Unionida) colonizing two canals of the Ebro River (Spain). Special attention was given Pseudunio auricularius (Spengler, 1793), critically endangered species. Generalized linear mixed models results showed significant temporal effects densities, with...
The interaction between figs (Ficus, Moraceae) and fig-pollinating wasps (Chalcidoidea, Agaonidae) is one of the most specific mutualisms, thus a model system for studying coevolution cospeciation. In this study we focused on their associated fig-wasps found in Ryukyu Bonin (Ogasawara) Islands, Japan, because it has been suggested that breakdown specificity may occur islands or at edge species' distribution. We collected 136 samples 15 native fig species 95 13 from all major including two...
Abstract Pseudunio auricularius (Spengler, 1793) is one of the most threatened unionid species worldwide. Translocation considered ultimate actions that can save this from extinction in Iberian Peninsula. Since 2013, massive mortalities have been recorded Canal Imperial de Aragón (CIA), an anthropogenic habitat where highest density P. had Spain. An adequacy index was calculated assigning scores to different environmental variables select suitable river stretches receiving translocated...
Abstract Margaritifera auricularia is one of the most endangered freshwater mussels (Bivalvia, Unionida) in world. Since 2013, abundance this species Ebro River basin (Spain) has sharply declined, driving to verge regional extinction. Therefore, any management measures that might facilitate recovery would be essential for its conservation. During 2014–2016, captive breeding M. allowed production >10 6 juveniles, out which 95% were released into natural environment, and 5% grown laboratory...
To estimate the vector species of arboviruses affecting cattle, Culicoides biting midges were collected by light traps in Naha and Ishigaki cities Okinawa from 2001-2004. Four 14 captured cities, respectively. One strain Bluetongue virus (BTV) was isolated brevitarsis Kieffer city on December 2003. Genetic phylogenetic analyses showed that closely related to Australian Asian BTV isolates. Our data indicate C. is likely be a Okinawa.
A significant part of freshwater mussel populations has strongly declined and many species are severely threatened nowadays. Captive breeding programs often form a central conservation strategies. As the life cycles include an obligate parasitic phase, host fish health is crucial component successful efforts. However, information about safe application therapeutants in captive scarce. This article summarizes practical experiences Europe. In total, eight different were used to treat...
